GALLERY: In stark contrast to 2013, Sandown’s main carnival was celebrated last night (Saturday) under the hot summer sunshine for the 125th year of the seaside event, which attracted thousands of people to line the streets in celebration.
Crowds of spectators enjoyed the colourful, vibrant and well-organised procession as it made its way through Sandown, moving off from Culver Parade shortly after 19:00. The sound of the carnival echoed throughout the town with parade lifting the atmosphere.
Performers from a variety of groups and organisations made a fabulous effort, turning out in true style including the Wight Strollers, who this year have done bird suits for their always-rememberable carnival entry.
Carnival Queens from across the Island smiled and waved for the second carnival outing of the season following last Saturday’s season opener, Newport Main. In an unique twist, former Sandown Queens were invited to join the procession on board a vintage bus, once again staring in the carnival as they once did as children.
Firefighters from Sandown lead the way in their Scania fire appliance alongside the town’s volunteer independent lifeboat – Sandown and Shanklin Independent Lifeboat – who showed off their life-saving vessel to all and raised much-needed funds.
A variety of the Island’s marching bands provided traditional performances with some musicians wearing a less formal outfit for the event due to the soaring temperatures.
The carnival circus moves to Cowes on Wednesday for the Cowes Main Carnival, moving off at 19:00. The carnival returns to Sandown on 27th August for the illuminated procession, which moves off at 20:30.
