A brand new inline hockey team has officially launched on the Isle of Wight with ambitions to grow the fast-paced sport across the Island and create opportunities for players of all ages.
The Wight Sharks Inline Hockey Team has been established under the governance of the Isle of Wight Roller Hockey Association and aims to build a strong community-focused club for players, coaches, volunteers and supporters.
Club officials say the launch marks the beginning of a long-term vision to develop competitive inline hockey (alternatively known as roller hockey) while creating pathways for future generations to get involved in the sport.
As preparations begin for the club’s inaugural season, the Wight Sharks are actively recruiting senior players aged 16 and over, alongside coaches interested in helping develop the sport locally.
The club says both experienced players and complete beginners are welcome to get involved.
Although the immediate focus is on establishing the senior side, plans are already underway to introduce youth teams and junior development pathways.
The Wight Sharks also hope to engage with the wider community through school visits and youth outreach sessions designed to introduce children and young people to inline hockey.
Schools, youth organisations and community groups across the island are being encouraged to contact the club to arrange visits and learn more about the sport.
Alongside player recruitment, the Sharks are also seeking sponsorship support from Island businesses through a range of partnership opportunities designed to help fund and grow the club.
In a statement announcing the launch, the club described the project as:
“More than the creation of a hockey team – it is the beginning of a community-focused movement dedicated to growing sport, creating opportunities, and building a lasting legacy for inline hockey on the Island.”
The club’s launch campaign carries the slogan: “The Tide Is Turning.”
