Over 100 Islanders travelled to London at the weekend to join the ‘Put It To The People’ march at the end of another tumultuous week of Brexit politics.
A coach filled with families and older people – a large proportion of whom had never been to a protest before – made its way from Portsmouth to London on Saturday. The group watched the front of the march set off at midday and Islanders were still marching through central London at 17:00.
Glenn Koppany, from Islanders for Europe, said:
“It was such a fantastic day with a lovely, positive atmosphere along the route. We were overwhelmed to be surrounded by well over a million bright and hopeful people, of all ages and backgrounds. The Isle of Wight continued our reputation for musical contributions to the march – this time with the addition of a couple of ukuleles!”
A petition to halt the process of Brexit and give the nation time to rethink its strategy has now reached over 5 million signatories, with nearly 9,000 on the Isle of Wight.
Vix Lowthion, IW Green Party spokesperson, said:
“The turn-out was massive – many, many more than the 750,000 who turned out to march in October.
“After a thousand days of negotiations, this government have made an absolute mess of Brexit. It’s now time for the people to Take Back Control and make the decisions which government have failed to do.”
Islanders for Europe next meet on Monday 8th April at 18:30 at the Riverside Centre, Newport. The meeting is open to anyone who supports the UK continuing membership of the European Union.

I didn’t know there were that many idiots on the Island that don’t know what democracy is.We had our vote and it was to leave now you want to turn our country into a dictatorship. WELL DONE TWATS.
Terry Nutman is quite right. The whole idea of a democracy is that we accept the wishes of the majority. A “second vote” would be nonsensical and quite opposed to democratic principles. My advice to the so-called remainers would be “Better luck next time”.
What are the benefits of leaving the EU ?
The sensible money is on remain than Teresa Mays disaster deal
I suspect that neither of you fossils will live long enough to be affected by Brexit so I can’t see why you’re even wasting your time commenting.
it could be because we care about democracy and our country. Im no fossil but I expect your a young snow flake who’s brain is still waiting to grow. You should only comment when you know what your talking about you will care when you wake up to the two faced lie telling bastards in government to a dictatorship. Just look at the countries that have dictators running them, then tell you want that.
I quite agree, 17 million more voted out than remain, why should we have another vote just because some idiots don’t understand what Democracy is. March 29th, OUT, what ever. Why should we deal with a set up that hasn’t had its accounts signed off for over 20 years.
It’s amazing the amount of people who only believe in democracy if it goes along with what they want. The majority the country voted leave the EU, so get over it. If you like being in Europe so much then move there. You will soon change your mind.
Well 100 people out of a population of 140,000
I think that sums it up
The 2016 referendum was nonsensical. We were not asked what our future relationship with the EU should look like. We were told we could keep all the benefits of membership. We were told we would be financially better off. It all turned out to be lies from millionaire disaster capitalists and tax evaders who manipulated opinions using advertising paid for by foreign enemies who saw an opportunity to destabilise the EU.
Whatever your personal reason for wanting to protest the government – and there are plenty of reasons with austerity, privatisation of the NHS, their broken policies on immigration and massive growth in inequality – the answer isn’t to blame the EU. Don’t let the liars in the tabloid newspapers trick you into believing every ill comes from Brussels, it simply isn’t true. The EU isn’t an evil foreign entity, it’s a club we are part of and in fact we have a larger than average share in the decision process and policies and that’s before you take into account the special deal we have with our vetos and exemptions.
If you voted leave, I urge you to look at what it is you are unhappy about and consider if, in fact, the blame lies in Westminster. I think you’ll be pretty angry when you discover the truth. Angry with immigration levels? That’s our government policy, not the EUs. Think our fishermen have a raw deal? it was our government who sold their quotas.
As to “democracy” well of course we can change our minds, that’s why we return to the voting booth and re-elect our MPs and councillors on a regular basis. The call for a fresh referendum isn’t re-running the 2016 one, it’s calling for the government to explain the proposed exit deal and giving us a say on that. With the option of “now that I know the truth, we’re better off in the EU than out”.
