10-year-old Tallulah Mears from the Isle of Wight has been busy baking brownies for Red Nose Day for a second year running – and has even sent a batch to The Queen!
Last year the West Wight youngster raised £700 selling her salted caramel chocolate chip brownies from her roadside ‘shed shop’ on Wilmingham Lane. This year she expanded the operation by involving all her friends, and so far she’s made over £1,600.
A JustGiving fundraising page has been set up and is welcoming donations at https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/Samantha-Mears2.
After hearing that the Queen was diagnosed with COVID, Tallulah decided to bake her a batch of brownies and send it to the monarch as a ‘get well gift’. She sent the treats on Wednesday morning and is eagerly awaiting a reply.
It’s not the first time Tallulah has written to the Royals. She is passionate about the environment and wants to make the Isle of Wight the ‘cycling capital of Europe’, and has previously written about her plans to Prince Charles. She received a reply from Clarence House thanking her for her manifesto.
Tallulah says:
“I decided to fundraise for Comic Relief after seeing one of their films, which made me sad.
“At first, we sold eggs from our own chickens out of a wooden ‘Shed Shop’ on the road next to our house. But I decided to bake with them instead and I made hundreds of salted caramel chocolate chip brownies. It’s a top-secret family recipe that my mum taught me, and I wrapped them up in paper bags with stickers I made myself. At least one or two would be sold every day and they flew off the shelves at the weekends.
“I was amazed when I realised I had raised £700. I’ve never really accomplished something like that before. This year I want to do even better and raise over £1,000 so I have asked my school friends and some local families to help. We will sell them at different stalls along a popular cycling route.
“I would tell any other children thinking about fundraising to be brave and don’t hold back. The challenge can be so much fun, and it is really nice to help Comic Relief”.
