Five toilets decorated by local artists as part of the Your Loo Could Save You bowel cancer awareness campaign will be on exhibition at Quay Arts Centre in July in an exhibition to rival ‘The Loo-vre’.
The toilets were placed at various locations around the Island in May and caused quite a media stir.
The aim was to draw attention to the Your Loo Could Save You campaign which is being run by One Wight Health, the federation of the Island’s GP practices, to raise awareness of bowel cancer – the fourth most common form of cancer.
Toilets were chosen as a campaign symbol as some of the symptoms of bowel cancer can be detected through going to the loo.
Now the 5 beautiful toilets – created by Island artists Maddy Dobson, Nathan Holt, Gemma Mallinson, Holly Maslen and Josh Raffell – can be viewed in all their glory at the Quay Arts Centre’s Clayden Gallery – offering both artistic inspiration and potentially life-saving information.
The exhibition will highlight the artists’ creative thinking behind their designs and also give information on bowel cancer, its symptoms and what to do if you have concerns.
Fiona Seymour, Your Loo Could Save You project lead said:
“We hope the exhibition will provide an unusual and rewarding artistic experience while also raising awareness of bowel cancer, a highly treatable form of the disease if caught early.
“We are so grateful to Quay Arts Centre for hosting this exhibition and we hope visitors to the gallery are inspired and informed by the unusual work of the fabulous artists behind these wonderful toilets.”
The exhibition is now open to the public following its official launch on Monday 7th July at a V.I.P. (Very Important Poo) event attended by artists, health professionals and campaign supporters. It runs until 27th July.
