Dozens of contract workers at GKN Aerospace in East Cowes have been let go as a result of the ongoing issues with the Boeing 737 MAX, which has led to a reduction in production.
Island Echo understands that 37 members of the workforce were told yesterday (Wednesday) that they are no longer required. A further 25+ contractors could also be at risk moving forward, with no guarantees that permanent staff won’t be effected further down the line.
The contract workers had been involved in the production of 737 MAX winglets.
In a statement issued to Island Echo this lunchtime, a spokesman for GKN Aerospace East Cowes has said:
“We have been working with our customer on an ongoing basis to address the challenging situation of the 737 MAX production suspension in order to minimise the impact on GKN Aerospace and our related workforce and suppliers.
”This impact is being managed on a site-by-site basis globally.
“At our East Cowes site, we have had to take the initial step of releasing contract workers on the programme in order to try to protect our permanent workforce.
“We are working hard to manage any further impact to the site through normal turnover of employees, but cannot rule out additional impact.
“It remains a key priority for GKN Aerospace to safeguard our capability, to support ramp up in volume at the appropriate time, when production resumes.”

So they will end up with lot’s of managers still employed doing basically no work as usual, with no actual work force .
As a technical manager for a long time at this and another well known engineering firm, you have proved what a doughnut you are.
Won’t take long before the Remainiacks blame Brexit…
Travel the World doing business with our former European colleagues as I have done girly. Then make the same comment a few years from now. Get back to the world of the small minded.
GKN, awful company to work for.
I would say a good company, has kept a lot of people working for many years on the island. These are sub-contractors that are losing there jobs, not full time workers.
Slightly unfair to say ‘only subcontractors’ a large number of them have been working at the site full time for at least 18 months on the premise that they’ll soon be receiving a full gkn contract for the last 8 months. For them to walk into work and suddenly lose their livelihood with no prior warning is awful, but hey they’re only subcontractors so it doesn’t matter right?

Do you only cut and paste story’s from iwcp???
You will find that, as is usually the case, Island Echo reported this story first – hence our ‘first reported by island echo’ tag.
This story went live at 12:55. CP put their story up around 13:30, some 35 minutes later.
Well done Island Echo, you do a stonking good job…
I’m surprised there’s no photos!!
Have the balls and use your own name , you are clearly a keyboard warrior who gets off in putting other people down because your own self-esteem is extremely low. There is a saying if you have nothing nice to say then say nothing at all.
Ok mate, prove to me that Darren Street is your real name then!
Hope they get rid of all the managers and engineers who have retired and returned shortly afterwards on mega bucks
WELL SAID ISLANDECHO
Just a matter of time before more redundancies, i knew as soon as melrose took over that was always going to happen, feel for the people.
Bad leadership!!!
Bring Jeff Armitage back.. He can save them.
