The Isle of Wight Branch of the Workers’ Education Association (WEA) is offering up its new and interesting programme to allow Islanders to increase their knowledge or further their interests.
The WEA is the UK’s largest voluntary sector provider of adult education, delivering 9,500 part-time courses for over 75,000 people each year in England and Scotland.
• John Medland is offering A Maritime History of the Isle of Wight on Saturday 14th November at Newport Congregational Church Hall in Pyle Street, Newport.
Explore the long and rich maritime history of the Isle of Wight from the Stone Age to modern times. Stories of trade, salvage, shipwreck, piracy, naval war and land invasions, smuggling, colonisations of distant lands between 10:00-13:00. Fee £9.95.
• Ruth Waller is offering Romans and Saxons on the Isle of Wight on Saturday 13th February – also at Newport Congregational Church Hall – from 10:00 until 13:00. Fee £9.95.
Handle and study real archaeological objects and learn about archaeological evidence for life in Roman and Saxon Isle of Wight. With latest information on archaeological work carried out on the Island over the last 10 years.
• In March Richard Smout is offering Archives of the Royal National Chest Hospital Ventnor on Saturday 5th March at Ventnor Enterprise Centre, 1 Salisbury Gardens, Dudley Road, Ventnor from 10:00–13:00, also with a fee of £9.95.
The Royal National Hospital Ventnor: 1868-1964. A chance to look at surviving archives of the hospital, using them to learn more about the building’s history and the stories of some of the patients and their treatment.
• Paul Bingham is offering Recording Isle of Wight Weather later in the month on Saturday 19th March at Medina Valley Centre, Dodnor Lane, Newport from 10:00-13:00, fee £9.95.
An historical overview of weather recording will be followed by an introduction to how weather is currently recorded at the Island’s manual recording stations and ‘automatic weather recording’. A practical session will conclude with an opportunity to chart weather data.
Sadly, art courses with tutor Gail Wright have been suspended following the sudden death of Gail in July. It is hoped that art courses will be on offer again in the future.
