Major work to improve Great Preston Road in Ryde will begin in the New Year, with the road closed both day and night for 6 weeks.
The project will upgrade 3 extremely poor sections of Great Preston Road between Carlton Road and Alexandra Road – a total area of around 1,200 square metres.
Works will begin on 16th January and are expected to take 6 weeks to complete, finishing before the end of February. That’s 4 weeks less than originally thought when Island Echo reported on plans for the improvement scheme back in October.
To reduce the need for further work in the future, the work will involve strengthening the road itself as well as resurfacing. As a result, Great Preston Road will be closed as a through road from Nicholson Road to St John’s Hill for the duration of the project.
The work has been timed for outside of the summer months when traffic is lighter and also after other roadworks in the area – such as the broadband upgrade by WightFibre and nearby footway improvements – have been completed.
Letters have been sent to residents to explain how they will be affected by the work and what they need to do if they require special arrangements. Ryde Fire Station has also been contacted although access to the station, along with Ryde Business Park on Nicholson Road, will be maintained at all times from the Westridge end.
An Island Roads spokesperson has said:
“Residents of Great Preston Road and all who use it will know that this repair work is very much needed.
“The improvements we are making are designed to improve the foundation of the road as well as the surface itself and we hope this will reduce the need for ongoing maintenance. This does mean that we have to dig a deeper excavation in order to strengthen the foundations and as a result it will not be possible to open the road to through traffic during the work.
“We appreciate this will cause some localised inconvenience, but we hope residents believe any short-term disruption will be outweighed by the improvements the work will deliver. We’d like to thank the local community in advance for their co-operation.”
There are calls from local residents to put double yellow lines on 1 side of the road, between Preston Close and Nicholson Road, to ease the current traffic situation. Some local residents are causing an obstruction by parking on the opposite side of the road to everyone else, which some fear will lead to an accident.

Oh here we go again, part done job. ISLAND TOADS, THE ROAD IS AN UTTER DISASTER END TO END. FOR ONCE DO THE JOB PROPERLY, WESTRIDGE CROSS TO ST JOHNS HILL. And put the proper number of operatives on the job so as to complete in the minimum amount of time. No chance, of course.
What drugs you on? every road they have rebuilt has been excellent. Sounds like you are that bloke I know who also tried to get the tender and failed because your company are cowboys who have messed up roads before.
And just who’s payroll are you on Fred, IR’s? Or do you live on the other Isle of Wight? The standard of the roads on the IOW in question is nothing short of appalling and the entire length of Great Preston Road is a typical example. Nothing but bodge and bodge, end to end. Personally I would not allow that crowd to even lay the carpet path to my kid’s Wendy house. No way.
I’m not saying these improvements aren’t need as they are
but it must be a nice feeling to have a bottomless pit of money for island roads to persistently be able to draw on
with cost of living going the way it is there be fewer vehicles on the roads anyway
But Hey that’s just what the government want reduce emissions ,,,they win again
island roads 1 government 1 all very happy indeed
Don’t forget to lay Double Yellow lines along the length of
Great Preston Road to STOP the persons living in the Council Houses
Parking illegally on Pavements!!
Don’t forget to lay Double Yellow lines so persons no longer clog up
Pavements along Great Preston Road.
Pavements are for pedestrians NOT Vehicles
Does that mean they will finally install Double Yellow lines
along Great Preston Road Ryde to Stop persons parking on pavements.
If they do put yellow lines by them council houses better not put them on our side. my kid has disabilites and i cant struggle each day walking far just becasue of some ocd builder parkin vans ever day on pavemunts.
are garden to steep to have parkin not like him he has nosy motor bike an all with two cars and van and family parks on pavemunt an all.
suprised dog aint got a car to itself
Households should be limited to the number of vehicles they own.
Permit parking would put a STOP to Households owning additional vehicles.
Anyone parking on pavements should be clamped immediately then Towed away
THEY WON’T DO IT AGAIN, when they have to pay a large fee to get their vehicle back from the Compound.
Council Tax should reflect the Number of Vehicles an Household owns.
IW Council should create an Islwide team that includes Tow Trucks etc to patrol
The Island busiest roads.
Great Preston Road in Ryde like many other Roads are very busy at all times.
If a pedestrian gets knocked over due to an Household parking a vehicle illegally on a
Pavement I would say that vehicle owner is Liable.
Sounds like a Nuisance
No Vans should be left overnight along residential Roads or Streets.
Why not park such contraptions round Nicholson Road!
Keep residental Roads free.
IW Council should address these issues.
Thanks for that comment “Ginger Minger”. The spelling and grammar leave much to be desired! By “council houses”, I presume you mean ex-council houses which are Housing Association properties or are now privately owned properties.
upgrade sections of it, the whole lot needs doing
I am surprised no one has commented yet about the inconsiderate pavement parking on this road outside the council houses.
The Tenants living at No.90 seem to not understand what Pavements are for.
IW Council should send a District Steward along to educate them what pavements are for.
No.1 It is Illegal to park on Pavements – Read the Highway code.
No.2 Pavements are for pedestrians.
No.3 Roads are for cars “NOT PAVEMENTS”.
Some individuals are clueless!, they think they can Park anywhere they want.
Vans can get away with being parked on pavements as delivery drivers do it all the time, so any passing traffic wardens will assume they are just unloading etc.
So I doubt it will stop, and it seems more a victimisation of a hard working decent family man, more than an ‘issue’ for anyone.
Mr M works hard pays a fortune in taxes and likely keeps via them many of the benefit, disabled, and those with tax credit funded clones who constantly diss him on here.
Just mind you own business and live and let live. We live close and have no problem with him or his van.
In fact if anything it slows the traffic which otherwise from the drug dealers at Preston close drive like loons.
Vans do their drop then drive away,
where as the Tenants along Great Preston Road outside the Council Houses
Leave vehicles parked on pavements 24/7
Drive along Great Preston Road and you will see the usual
PAVEMENT BLOCKERS
All those asking for yellow lines may live to regret it when electric car charging is needed and everyone is after the few public roadside parking and charging places left.
Those in council houses who because they pay little or no rent and council tax are the ones who can afford cars, especially as most have kids and they get paid a fortune for each, so be carefully what you wish for, especially if it is just for ‘revenge’ of someone more successful than yourselves.
Paul is a clean living, hard working man. More than can be said for many of the subsidised housing people nearby.
Perhaps if we install Gabion cages along the pavements that may prevent problematic pavement parkers?
They do seem to be the answer to a multitude of problems.I think we all need more and more Gabion cages in our lives
Enough of the clap trap
clean living or hard working does not give someone the right to
Park on Pavements
obviously lacks Brains
Pavements were designed for pedestrians, not selfish idiots parking their vehicles
Whether successful or not it does not provide the right to park a vehicle on a pavement
Why should we pay rent when clean living, hard working Paul is going to work
there are not enough jobs for everyone.
We need more people like him, life is tough in these economic times
Lol.
Still does not give him or his family the right to park on pavements.
This whole parking on pavements on grass verges on yellow lines needs clamping down on
ive seen cars parked fully on pavements along and down York Avenue recently just to park outside their house ,,, bloody disgrace to let them get away with it .
its a police issue if on double yellow lines or verges or pavements but the police just drive straight pass I’ve seen them do it .
cant be assed to get out the car and do the paperwork
So sad really, this should have been done correctly the first time.. can I charge Island roads for my cars suspension parts?? This part of the road has been bad for years now.
Surely it would have been less disruptive to coordinate WITH Wight Fibre perform these works WHILST the road was already closed for other works.
Then again, that’s only the council’s legal obligation so why would anyone bother to do that?
And, given that most Wight Fibre cables are under the pavement not the roads it’s strange that they have to shut so many roads to install it. But, I guess they need someplace to park their vans so they can sit in them.
The road gets chewed up by the bus company using city busses in a rural setting. Ryde is not a city. They got these busses for the schools contracts to maximize profits. Then use them for the bus service. Wrong buses on the wrong types of roads. Look at the web site for the bus manufacture. They state to not be use in rural roads. Too heavy. Next time you pass a bus stop look at the state of the roads. Then look at the types of busses in the museum. All smaller lighter busses.
Why is there no Christmas Tree placed at the end of Great Preston Road this year.
We all pay our council tax
Why don’t IW Council / Island Roads
Send a letter to all the Households along Great Preston Road
instructing them not to Park Vehicles on Pavements
It is against the Law Parking a Vehicle on a pavement.
Only Emergency services have the right to park on pavements.
I suggest all those with issues of the van parked at Great Preston rd, go around to the owner and discuss their concerns, instead of putting notes on car and vans and damaging them.
Perhaps too afraid and would prefer to snitch and block up the Echo with endless fake i-d names.
I know who you are, as many others do. This is a law abiding country, not some S.A state.
