Police, fire and ambulance crews are responding to a single vehicle road traffic collision on Long Lane on the outskirts of Newport this morning (Sunday).
1 vehicle – a white Citroen C1 – has been involved in the crash between Staplers Road gyrotory and the Robin Hill roundabout.
Island Echo understands the female driver is trapped inside the car, which has come to a stop on its side.
The crash occurred shortly before midday and has not involved any other vehicles.
Police have closed the road in both directions with traffic diverting locally via Briddlesford Road and Whiterails Road.
UPDATE @ 13:00 – The young female driver has been extricated from the vehicle and is now in the care of paramedics.
She is not thought to have sustained any serious injuries.
It’s understood the vehicle collided with a bank on the left hand side of the road whilst heading towards Downend. This resulted in the driver losing control and rolling the vehicle onto its side.
Sunlight through the trees – plus smoke across the carriageway from a nearby bonfire – are thought to have been contributory factors.
Recovery of the car is underway and the road is expected to reopen shortly.
UPDATE @ 13:50 – The road has now reopened.

How??? Speechless…..
Hopefully she is ok. The lesson here is, please slow down when road conditions like visibility are bad!!!
Another accident on these UNSAFE island Roads.
Reduce speeding F.F.S
Nothing wrong with the roads
It’s the idiots on them.
I drove through 20mph Brading this evening
and some dopey Cnut came at me doing 40mph+
THERE IS NO LAW AND ORDER ON ISLAND ROADS
I would have speed cameras everywhere and fine the
Speeding cnuts and give them points.
NOOO… learn to drive properly to the conditions of the road …So easy for people to blame speed..What stupidity when cars are safer nowadays just the driving has got worse
Paul, it’s not the roads that are UNSAFE, it’s the many UNSAFE drivers. Your point regarding speeding I agree with you, but if stupid drivers are going to speed, they will. Until tougher sentences are given out by the judges, nothing will change, unfortunately.
Perhaps the young female driver was texting at the time?
Wouldn’t surprise me, when I look in the mirror most females are playing with their
Phones
This is such a dangerous road that’s seen many terrible accidents. The council needs to reduce the speed along here now as a priority. Traffic is always racing up this road. I always put my lights on so I can be seen by cars coming the other way. Buses and lorries get stuck passing each other as well. Just get it done before any more fatalities. Who is in charge of these decisions at the Council? Maybe Bob Searly needs to step up and make it happen.
How would you reduce speeding? What would you want the council to actually do? This driver might not have been exceeding speed limit BTW, looks like they had vision impacted by condition, veered to side of road and hit bank. Don’t necessarily need a lot of speed to to that.
Eh? The speed limit is irrelevant if visibility is poor – SLOW DOWN !!!
Maybe the idiots need educated….
“Maybe Bob Searly needs to step up and make it happen”
Ha, Ha, Ha, ……. That Tvvat couldn’t organise a piSS up in a brewery
A hundred road signs would make no difference. Just drive to the correct conditions. Even on island roads that state 60mph does not mean that you should do that speed.
Having a fire with smoke across a highway is illegal and on a Sunday as well.
No it isn’t.
Main factor was most likely excessive speed.
And probably checking mobile phone
Much more likely.
Put traffic lights up. That’ll solve the problem!
Why do most crashes on the island involve women drivers???….if visibility is a course, then engage brain and slow down, its not rocket science…..
You unfortunately don’t have a brain so can’t engage one !!!!!!
Us women can multi task , alas judging by your comment, you need to slow down!!!! Otherwise you may damage the half a brain cell you have left …..
State your research data source for your idiotic statement, please, Jo Blag It.
Why is excessive speed, inattention or inexperience never used as a reason for accidents? Thousands of cars pass that way over the years with no accidents or issues and yet when a slight inattention is an obvious cause it becomes a ‘sun and smoke’ issue. Experienced drivers will lower their sun visors, slow down and proceed with caution, which every other car on that road managed to do quite nicely. So come on, an accident is an accident, we don’t need to make silly excuses for a bit of careless driving that we have all committed at one time or another.
Yes, maybe visor not down… looking at phone…rabbit ran across the road… Who knows why. Only the driver and she’s not going to fess up to doing something wrong…As others say, thousands us that road without incident. Young driver lacking experience?
I drive, have done for over 30 years.
I’m only 5′ tall. I always have the sun visor down. But it’s not always enough… the sun is too low. I do slow down, but the drivers that come up behind me are not happy that I’ve slowed down.
Bonfire smoke endangering traffic .
Or the interior mirror used for checking false eyelashes, fake tan is even, or, the phone screen to read the latest msg from tinder.
I hope the young lady is ok and that the bonfire maker gets a warning letter from the council.
See you old farts shouldn’t off drive your a danger
I think it is terrible
You younger farts should learn some spelling and grammar.
Can’t see due to bright sunlight slow down then simple really
Quite intrigued by the reference to Staplers Road “girotory”
A “gyratory” is a rather complicated roundabout.
A “girotory” is the old name for a supporter of the Conservatives who received his benefits by post each fortnight.
It happens. What’s important is that she is alive and okay
Phones should be banned when driving.
Might be an idea to teach folks how to use the brake pedal to slow the vehicle when visibility is poor. The speed limit on the road is the max and it is not compulsory to maintain it at all times.
If one takes one’s eyes of the road for some reason one runs up the bank and turns over, turning over any other way is far more difficult.
‘Young female driver’ so obviously an inexperienced driver. Maybe driving too fast and doesn’t know how to control a car properly?
Glad this young lady wasn’t seriously injured, she could have so easily been.
Yet another old driver…..
You really can’t park there mate..how ? how does this happen on a daily basis..
