UPDATED: A woman has jumped from the Red Jet pontoon in Cowes this afternoon (Saturday) prompting a multi-agency emergency response.
Island Echo understands the female entered the water at around 17:15 beside the West Cowes Red Jet terminal after trying to board the Red Jet 4 vessel without a ticket, resulting in Police, Ambulance, Coastguard and RNLI teams being called to the scene.
The unknown woman has been pulled from the cold waters and has been transferred to a waiting ambulance on a stretcher.
Cowes RNLI were tasked to the incident – a short distance from their station, alongside Coastguard Rescue Teams from Newport.
UPDATE SUNDAY @ 13:20 – It has been confirmed this afternoon that a Police officer jumped into the water yesterday in an attempt to rescue the woman, who is said to be aged in her 30s.
Holding on tight to the unidentified female, the pair were quickly swept down the harbour by a strong ebb tide, however thankfully the Hampshire Constabulary officer managed to get to the Island Sailing Club pontoon where members of Cowes RNLI preformed emergency care action. The woman was unresponsive at the time.
The policeman, wrapped in blankets, was taken to the lifeboat station to recover from his heroic ducking and as reported previously, the woman was conveyed to an ambulance and on wards to St Mary’s Hospital, Newport.
