A woman has appeared in court after Police found 14 cannabis plants growing in her Newport home whilst they were investigating a reported COVID breach.
Amanda Greenough, 47, of Angelica Grove, Newport, pleaded guilty to producing a controlled Class B drug when she appeared in front of Magistrates on Tuesday.
Ann Smout, prosecuting, told the court that Police attended Greenough’s home address on the 7th March following a reported breach of coronavirus regulations. Upon arriving at the property, officers discovered 5 cannabis plants growing in the bedroom, with another 9 found in a padlocked room.
Drug cultivation paraphernalia was also located at the property including ventilation fans and grow tents.
Greenough was subsequently arrested, with a search of her phone revealing no evidence to suggest any intent to supply the drugs to others, with the amount found being classified as consistent with personal use by an investigating Detective Constable.
The defendant, who has a previous conviction for possession with intent to supply cannabis, claimed that the drugs were being grown for her own medicinal use to combat pain from arthritis and back problems.
The defence added that Greenough, who is a full-time carer, has tried other methods of controlling pain including CBD oil but has found cannabis to be the only effective remedy – usually baking it into muffins for edible consumption and occasionally smoking it when needed.
Greenough was handed a community order and a curfew lasting for 3 months. She must remain at home between 19:00 and 07:00 daily.

Isn’t it about time you could apply for a license to grow this plant in the uk …
If you can open coalfields Boris sort this out mate
Yeah that’s right. Because they’re both exactly the same!
I don’t take drugs I don’t grow drugs I’m not involved in drugs so i’m hardly the same am I .
A ‘licence’ for something that is illegal? How novel. If they do, I vote you go live next to them first. See how you like the stench and paranoid behaviour.
Exactly! I’ve had problems for years with different tenants moving into the rented house next door. The stench that comes through the walls, the noise at all hours. Why should peoples lives be made a misery from having to endure these sort of people and their ways moving in in close proximity to them? Not saying the woman in the article is exactly the same as some of them are, but too many make life intolerable for people not like themselves.
I think the same about people who drink and do stimulants
I don’t know why people seem to think it’s either weed or booze. In my experience of what I’ve had to put up with, they do both, They smoke dope they drink alcohol. They’re drugged up and drunk at the same time. Some people can’t do moderation in anything, and it’s the ones who don’t who cause problems for others. My grandmother used to drink copious amounts of whiskey to help with her arthritis, but I never saw her drunk and certainly never aggressive and she was obviously so used to it that it never affected her adversely. That isn’t the case with most people though, and the smell of weed being forced onto someone who don’t like it is horrible, why should people have to smell it in their homes when they don’t like it and don’t use it themselves? Anyone coming in would think a dopehead lived here when it’s from next door.
You must of smoked it already if that’s what you think..
The government does grant licenses to grow it. They may be growing some to export on the Island soon. So don’t speak down on them for suggesting an idea that makes a few board members of British sugar ext (who are married to Tory ministers in charge of drug policy) richer.
british sugar owns the largest cannabis plantation in the country and as such, britain exports more cannabis than any other country, legally. British sugar is the only company with a licence to do this.
FairPlay , I get your point
UK was the main producer and exporter of cannabis-based medicines in 2016, according to the UN’s International Narcotics …
I feel sorry for this woman who is a full time carer as well as being in constant pain. Many US states have leagalized it, with no ensuiung problems. This lady was clearly using it for her own use only. It’s already sometimes legalised for medical use. Stop lumping it together with harmful drugs.
I agree. The drugs they prescribe for chronic pain are actually far more damaging to the liver and kidneys, and
effect concentration, cognitive ability, amongst a whole list of other horrible side effects, as well as many being highly addictive.
The UK is the largest producer and exporter of legal cannabis in Europe.
That’s just from “Pan”
Previous for supply and gets off lightly, far right feminism
The irony of that statment.
