A 72-year-old woman has sustained neck injuries after being assaulted at a play park in Newport yesterday evening (Friday).
As first reported by Island Echo, Police were called at 18:43 to a report that a woman in her 70s having been assaulted on Furrlongs in Newport.
Police say that the victim was at Isobel Park when she was approached by a woman and assaulted, receiving a minor injury to her neck. She was taken to St Mary’s Hospital for treatment but has since been discharged.
A 28-year-old woman from Newport has been arrested on suspicion of assaulting a person thereby occasioning them actual bodily harm and attempting to cause grievous bodily harm with intent.
She remains in police custody at the current time.
Officers remained at the location yesterday evening but the cordon has since been stood down.

Well, I can tell you that my grandmother is the furthest thing from unpleasant and was simply walking our dog on the same route that she always does. She was randomly approached and greeted by this woman who instantly assaulted her and walked away. Thank goodness there was coincidentally a police car nearby she was able to run to for help, however still an extremely traumatic experience for her.
Yes not everyone is going to be pleasant, many people are far from it, however that sort of violence is never acceptable under any circumstances, beyond reasonable self defence, especially towards the vulnerable and elderly, so I find your comment to be rather disrespectful and completely unnecessary!

I wish the full story is given when things like this happen, all it leads to are conjectures as to who and why which can create a lot of negativity in thought which may or may not be justified. The attacker has been arrested on “suspicion of assault” unless you personally were involved you cannot make any comment until you know the facts.
