A belisha beacon at a zebra crossing in Ryde has been flattened by a van in a road traffic collision that has prompted a Police response tonight (Thursday).
Officers are currently in attendance at East Hill Road, where a white Vauxhall Astra van has collided with a piece of street furniture – rear end first.
It’s not entirely clear how the incident – which happened sometime before 21:30 – has occurred but no other vehicles are thought to be involved.
The belisha beacon near to St Mary’s Primary has been badly damaged in the smash, with Island Roads engineers called out to make safe the electrics.
A female has been arrested by Police and is to be taken into custody at Newport Police Station.

Probably Iv searle, they love their tarmac
How can u not see the bloody thing the street is well lit! Drunk/ drugs maybe. Luckily it was night time and no one was hurt? Why has her number plate been blocked out, it should be left showing so everyone knows she’s a useless driver? She should be paying to repair it now? Oh No probably got no money?
Of course she will pay for it! Island Roads will claim off her insurance. So fear not, it won’t cost you apenny!
Van on cloned plates….so probably uninsured.
That is why I thought it might have been a local
Majority of Islanders drive around with NO MOT
Islandwide ANPR will solve that problem
Thats extremely biased, what basis or proof do you have to prove your statement?
It is highly unlikely that the driver will be insured. So it may ultimately cost the rest of us.
What? Why is it highly unlikely?
