Families across the Isle of Wight are being encouraged to embrace their wild side this Easter with a range of free activities from the wildlife charity Butterfly Conservation.
From butterfly-spotting adventures to crafty kite-making and even creating your own Moon Meadow, there’s something for every young nature lover to enjoy – whatever the weather.
With several species of butterfly now taking flight, now’s the time to head outdoors and see which colourful critters you can spot. Among those to keep an eye out for this Easter are the yellow-winged Brimstone, the striking Red Admiral and the Peacock – known for the eye-like spots on its wings. Spotter sheets are available online to help little explorers keep track of what they’ve seen.
If the rain rolls in, there’s no shortage of indoor activities too. Families can download wild-inspired games, colouring sheets and even a butterfly-themed matching pairs game from the Butterfly Conservation website. Budding scientists can also learn about caterpillar adaptations and design their own clever creepy crawly.
For children glued to screens, a photowalk might be the perfect solution. With just a phone or tablet, families can head out into nature and snap creative wildlife shots using tips from the charity’s downloadable guide.
And for those feeling crafty, Butterfly Conservation’s make-your-own kite activity lets children design and build their own fluttering creation – just add wind.
One of the more magical ideas this Easter is the creation of a ‘Moon Meadow’ – a small garden space designed to attract moths and other nocturnal pollinators. Plants such as Night-scented Stock, Jasmine and Marjoram not only support wildlife but give children the chance to get stuck in with planting, then head out at dusk to see what visitors appear by torchlight.
