Police are hunting for the driver of a van that smashed into numerous vehicles on a residential street in Ryde tonight (Thursday), before then fleeing the scene and dumping his vehicle.
It was shortly after 19:00 that residents of Arthur Street were startled by a sudden loud bang, when a Ford Transit hi-top collided into a green Vauxhall and then a VW Golf.
The black Golf was shunted into a blue Ford Fiesta, which in turn was shunted into a white VW Polo – resulting in a total of 4 vehicles being damaged, plus the offending vehicle.
The driver, suspected to have been impaired at the time of the crash, sped off down the road with his van’s front wheel at a complete right angel. The Transit was then driven to nearby Ratcliffe Avenue and dumped at the side of the road – causing damage to the carriageway as it went.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has now launched an investigation into the hit-and-run incident, with officers seeking the driver responsible.
No arrests have yet been made.
The innocent owners of the 4 vehicles damaged are now counting the cost, with at least 3 of the cars likely to be write-offs.
