Residents at Orchard House Care Home in Newport have been treated to the musical talents of Wight Diamonds Marching Band.
The band played well-known music that residents sang along with, and at times accompanied the band by playing tambourines, cymbals, and drums, clapping their hands to the Marching Band.
Residents continued to talk about the evening for days after, reminiscing about days gone by and favourite music played. Wight Diamonds kindly donated their music CD for the Care Home to play again for residents.
Wight Diamonds Marching Band commented:
“Thank you for having us, we really enjoyed our evening and seeing lots of happy faces, we are really looking forward to returning soon.”
In other Orchard House news, residents celebrated Housekeeping Week, which took place from 11th to 17th September. Housekeeping Week is an annual event held during the second week in September. It is dedicated to recognising the efforts of hard-working housekeeping staff around the world.
Residents and staff reminisced about how housekeeping has changed during their lifetime, residents talked about when they first got domestic appliances such as washing machines and vacuum cleaners, and how their lives were changed by advances in technology over the years.
Kim Fleming, General Manager, said:
“It is so wonderful to be able to celebrate Housekeeping Week and thank our fantastic staff for all that they do not just for our residents but for our whole home.
Orchard House had a treat in store for their resident bookworms on 13th September as residents joined in to celebrate the wonderful work of Roald Dahl.
Roald Dahl Day celebrates the birthday of one of the greatest storytellers of all time. The prolific writer is known for penning many popular children’s books including Matilda, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The BFG, Fantastic Mr Fox, James and the Giant Peach to name but a few. He also wrote many books and short stories for adults, often with a twist in the tale. His books have been translated into 58 different languages and have sold well over 200 million copies worldwide.
Sue Hallett, Head of Lifestyle and Keely Heald, Dementia Activity Lead at Orchard House Care Home celebrated some of the most cherished and well known Roald Dahl stories. Residents joined in by having a chocolate, marshmallow and fruit tea party, word searches and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory snap game. In Memory Lane Unit, they all enjoyed BFG Dream Jars and DIY Lava Lamps, and sampled Willy Wonka-style chocolate bars while watching The BFG Meeting the Queen.
Kim Fleming General Manager at Orchard House Care Home said:
“We have many book lovers living here and they have agreed that Roald Dahl was an exceptional story teller. Everyone really enjoyed talking about their favourite characters from his books.”
A resident said:
“I remember reading Roald Dahl’s books when I was growing up and then reading them to my children and grandchildren and they are still as popular today, he really was so incredibly gifted.”
