The Dorset & Somerset Air Ambulance was called to the village of Whitwell earlier today (Monday) after a man was trampled on by a farm animal. Having left their Henstridge Airfield base in Somerset shortly before 09:30, flying doctors landed in a muddy field off Kemming Road at around 10:00 before making their way through the village to nearby Bannock Road. Several resources from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service, including an Operational Commander, were mobilised to a residential address after a male was taken ill. Island Echo understands that the casualty had been trampled on by a cow whilst walking their dog earlier in the morning. It is unclear as to what injuries he has sustained.
After an hour or so on the ground, the air ambulance medics walked back to the helicopter before taking off at around 11:00, heading back to the mainland. The casualty was conveyed by land ambulance to St Mary’s Hospital.

It never ceases to amaze me that the ambulance service that understandably bemoans the fact they do not have sufficient reources to meet need can then send an ambulance to a field, plus an operational commander, whatever one of those are, perhaps he had the big stick to wave off errant cows, then a air ambulance from somerset, cost, mamy thousands of pounds, casualty, obviously not serious as the air ambulance left without him and casualty taken to st marys so only a minor injury then becuase thats all they can treat. Watch any of the number or ambulance shows on the tele and they send massive resources to small incidents.
Because they were given limited information at the time of the call. Being crushed by a cow could be very serious and the victim could have needed live saving procedures on site. But then why would know you know that, you just talk utter rubbish online without ever engaging your brain. Instead of s**t posting you go and talk to some paramedics and learn why it is they came out to a call like this.
What a silly comment. These “resources” are still working regardless of whether they are attending incidents. Would you rather these people weren’t there when needed? You should hope that you never need them.
Over the cowing top if you ask me…..
They don’t know just how serious until a doctor arrives.. you know the difference in qualifications between a doctor and a paramedic?
Better to be safe than sorry in my opinion, and I’d be p*seed if my child didn’t get the life-saving treatment they needed just because someone didn’t want to spend money on enough resources to ensure they didn’t need their ruptured liver treating the appropriate hospital..
If you want to save the ambulance service money, charge people who make alcohol-related calls etc
A case of the cattle getting their own back on the dogwalkers.
Unless he was completely irresponsible I’m sure his dog was leaded.
As in on a lead or containing a relatively high amount of it?
You would be glad to see them if you needed them. Let’s hope you never do!
Thats the issue if they all turn up at one incident then there is less to go around, and as for the stupid comment about the difference between a paramedic and a doctor, how many ambulance crews call a doctor to the scene of their casualty they do not , they take them to hosiptal where they are seen by a doctor.
There is no consistency in the NHS anymore. I was left with heart failure after insisting I go to A&E, sat in St marys on a trolley for 12 hours then when I said if someone doesn’t help me I am going to die, not the first time I had said it either, told my doctor 2 months before. They put me on a hovercraft, with the paramedic saying, they get annoyed if we call air ambulance! When they did my bloods at Portsmouth they said I was very lucky to still be alive, they were so bad. Moral of this story, get trampled by a cow instead lol
Yet the endless, in the true sense of the word ‘arrivals’ each day are all cared and catered for, costing millions a year, yet the NHS is crumbling.
NOT coincidence in my opinion. The public tax payers money can only be spread ever thinly when those who have never paid into our system break it by overloading our countries wealth by breeding us into the poverty that they think they are leaving, but are, in fact, just spreading to everywhere they choose to settle enmasse.
I had a fall at work ending in 5 sezujes last week was airlifted to Southampton hospital with out that service i would not be here today
It does appear as possibly unnecessary as I associate the air ambulance within accessible areas.
