The White Lion pub in Niton has unexpectedly closed with immediate effect.
Spiraling costs and lack of trade have been blamed for the closure, which means customers now have to travel down towards the Undercliff for their nearest pub, The Buddle, which is also run by The Character Group.
It is currently unknown if any jobs have been lost and if so, how many.
Landlord Enterprise Inns have been advised that The Character Group do not wish to renew their tenancy at the end of the year, meaning a new tenant is now being sought.
It is hoped that the watering hole may be able to reopen at some point this year if rates can be negotiated, however it is said that these negotiations have been on-going for some time with no resolution in sight.
A notice has been pinned onto the pub’s doors advising customers of the closure (see below).
In the statement, the proprietors say:
“We would like to thank the many loyal customers who have frequented the Lion over the years and genuinely hope the pub can re-open and become a success again.
“A security company has been instructed to ensure the premises remains problem free with post being collected on a weekly basis. Whilst the pub is closed The Buddle Inn will be honouring all loyalty cards and also be staying open all day”.
