Islanders are being urged to share their experiences of using the NHS Pharmacy First service, as Healthwatch Isle of Wight launches a new survey to find out how well it is working for local residents.
Pharmacy First allows patients to seek advice and, where appropriate, receive treatment directly from a community pharmacist for 7 common health conditions without needing to see a GP first.
The service covers sinusitis, sore throats, earache in children, infected insect bites, impetigo, shingles and uncomplicated urinary tract infections (UTIs) in women.
Healthwatch Isle of Wight, the independent voice for people using health and social care services on the Island, wants to hear from those who have used Pharmacy First, as well as residents who could have accessed the service but chose not to.
The aim is to better understand people’s experiences, identify any barriers to accessing treatment and establish whether more information or improvements are needed.
Joanna Smith, Healthwatch Isle of Wight Manager, has said:
“Pharmacy First has changed the way people can access advice and treatment for a number of common health conditions, and we want to understand how this is working for people on the Isle of Wight.
“We’re interested in hearing from people who have used Pharmacy First about their experience, including what worked well and anything they feel could have been better.
“It’s also really important that we hear from people who chose not to use the service. Understanding the reasons behind this can help identify whether there are any barriers to accessing Pharmacy First or areas where people may need more information.
“The survey only takes a few minutes to complete, and every response will help us build a clearer picture of local people’s experiences.”
Residents can have their say by completing a short online or paper questionnaire, speaking to Healthwatch representatives at community engagement events or contacting the organisation by telephone, email or through its website.
The findings will be shared with health and care decision-makers, with a report detailing the results expected to be published in early 2027.
