The Isle of Wight Council is looking for suggestions of suitable land to add to the Island’s list of brownfield sites.
The council is preparing the next version of the Local Plan, known as the Island Planning Strategy. This document has an impact on where houses, businesses and other land uses can be created in the future, so finding sites that can be reused is an important part of the process.
The consultation runs over the next 4 weeks from Monday 15th February to Friday 19th March, and everybody is welcome to have a say.
People responding do not have to own the land in question or even know who does own it. Although landowners may wish to put forward their own land, it could simply be an area that local people think would be suitable for redevelopment. Brownfield land is land which has already been built on, and is suitable for redeveloping.
The council will review the land suggested, and contact landowners if needs be.
Of course, not every area of land suggested will get put on the list of brownfield sites, and even if land is on the list, it does not mean that it will automatically get redeveloped, as a planning application is still needed.
Cllr Barry Abraham said:
“This call for brownfield sites is an excellent opportunity for anyone to tell us about brownfield land they know about that may be suitable for development.
“No one knows the Island better than its residents, and I hope everyone will give this some thought over the next few weeks.”

Are there not enough building consent applications “on file” already?
The empty hotel on Sandown esplanade where construction has now ceased, the
The burnt out hotel on Sandown sea front and the hotel next to Browns and the Zoo
how about return some back to greenland – plant trees, encourage wildlife, enhance the biosphere status of the island – increase the amount of CO2 removed from the air with more plant life -why is this option not being considered.
how about brownfield sites being turned into green park areas
always about building more and more benefit hutches isn’t it – to get more council tax revenue in the the greasy pockets of a few.
On the old Broadlea school site.
why don’t they build on land next to our useless mp and the rest of this useless council in west wight
What about doing something with the town centers on the Island they are an eye sore.
BUILD between Newport and Freshwater if you must they have much more room and the traffic will not be gridlocked like it is this side of Newport.
How about calling time on any more building on the Isle of Wight and spend the money on UPGRADING the run down areas, empty shops, empty above shops, dilapidated buildings, offer to buy them.
Any more houses will only serve to need more GPs Hospital beds, Dental services, Police services, Schools and yes more parking issues.
There are no jobs prospects on the Island why encourage more people to move here?
Don’t build any more. At least not until the infrastructure is brought up to that required for the present population
They are asking islanders for their opinions. WHY. they never listen anyway. Improve what’s out there. But not a lot of gain for the councillors there, if you get my drift
If you have to BUILD how about something USEFUL like a place that gives worthwhile employment? There is no need for any more houses but there is a serious need to provide something that makes a life worth living, like a job with prospects and a future. As already suggested, that place on High Street, Newport, opposite the copshop would be a good start. Knock it down, and find something with a purpose to put there.
How about build some more main roads as the existing ones can’t cope. Oh yeah, there’s no more room for that is there, because the island has become overpopulated already.
Why not keep building till we all have to stand shoulder to shoulder for not being able to move.
The piece of land where the pub stood by Newport Fire Station, it’s been in that state for years. The old ruin behind Bargemans, someone started taking it down but nothing has happened for ages.
what ever you build make it affordable for the hard working youngsters that have been priced out of buying a house and are locked into renting. And make sure age restricted to under 55’s. If they can have over 55’s only then can have it the other way. They can say under 55 and working on the island.
I agree with regeneration. What were once thriving seaside towns are now dead. Even heard coach of OAP’s visiting Sandown about 10 years back… One said was more life in her husband, and he’d been dead for years. Also, We need way more jobs.
Do something for the kids
