Island wheelchair user Andy Barton has gained his Level 2 Powerboat Certificate of Competence thanks to the Cowes Sailability Club.
Under instruction from Tim Griffin, of Griffin Marine Services, Andy has learnt to use the specially designed dual helm on Cowes Sailability’s vessel ‘Dougal’.
Andy was diagnosed with Primary Progressive MS 10 years ago, which affected his balance to the extent that he is no longer able to walk and has to use a powered wheelchair. His condition eroded his self-belief and confidence in social interaction.
Andy comments:
‘This achievement, in gaining my PBII with Cowes Sailabilty, has been the most beneficial skill that I have learned since I moved here to the Isle of Wight. Gaining this new discipline has restored my belief in myself.
“I feel that I can now contribute towards a meaningful activity on this fabulous island”.
Cowes Sailability Club provides recreational boating for people with disabilities on the Isle of Wight. Further information can be obtained from Mr Barry Myland on 07958 786164.
