Here’s a look at what theatrical delights await any budding theatre lovers on the Isle of Wight this February.
It’s February – the weather may still be chilly, but there’s lots to look forward to – Pancake Day, Valentine’s Day…and plenty of wonderful Island theatre.
The good news is you’re still in time to catch Private Peaceful at the Apollo Theatre. Set in World War I, we follow a night in the life of Private Tommo Peaceful, a young soldier awaiting the firing squad at dawn. How did he get to this? Through narrative and flashback, we follow his early, happy life in rural Devon, meet his family and friends – as well as the love of his life – and learn his poignant story.
Private Peaceful runs from Friday, February 3rd to Saturday, February 11th (not Sunday or Monday). Tickets can be obtained from the Apollo Theatre online at https://www.apollo-theatre.org.uk/private-peaceful/ or by calling 01983 210010.
Always a delight, The Wight Strollers are back with their annual pantomime. This year they bring us Aladdin, the tale of a boy who finds a magic lamp and goes from thief to prince overnight in the hope of winning the hand of the girl he loves.
With the cost of living high, The Wight Strollers have chosen to freeze their ticket prices this year, in the hope of giving as many families as possible the chance to enjoy some panto magic.
Director Emily Scotcher says:
“Everyone has worked so hard to make this the most fun-filled, toe-tapping and colourful show, and we can’t wait to share it with our audiences – they really are in for a treat!”
Aladdin is being performed at Medina Theatre on February 11, 12 and 18, with tickets priced at £14 for adults and £10 for under-14s (prices include the theatre’s £1 per ticket booking fee). Tickets are available at www.medinatheatre.co.uk or by calling 01983 823884 – but be quick as they’re selling fast as always.
The talented youngsters of Curtain Call Creative are delighted to present 9 to 5 The Musical at Shanklin Theatre. With music and lyrics by Dolly Parton and book by Patricia Resnick, the show is based on the seminal 1980 hit movie. Set in the late 1970s. this hilarious story of friendship and revenge in the Rolodex era is outrageous, thought-provoking and even a little romantic.
Pushed to the boiling point, three female co-workers concoct a plan to get even with the sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot they call their boss. In a hilarious turn of events, Violet, Judy and Doralee live out their wildest fantasy – giving their boss the boot! While Hart remains “otherwise engaged,” the women give their workplace a dream makeover, taking control of the company that had always kept them down. Hey, a girl can scheme, can’t she?

Over in Bembridge, GASP are staging a traditional Old Time Music Hall. As well as a variety of songs, dances and comedy featuring many of the talented performers who delighted the packed Village Hall with The Pirates of Penzance and started Christmas with their Carols and Mince Pies, there will be plenty of opportunity for the audience to sing along to some old favourites or just enjoy the spectacle of a theatre tradition stretching back over a hundred years.

Forget the cold and rain, and bask in the warmth of the music and laughter.
