The Isle of Wight is set for a wet and windy weekend, with a weather warning in force from IW Met Service and a flood alert issued by the Environment Agency.
Forecasters are warning that over the next 48 hours we will see a large variety of active weather with heavy rain, severe gales and large waves effecting the Island.
A yellow weather warning for strong winds is in place for Sunday. Very strong Southwesterly winds will develop throughout the afternoon with gusts up to 60-70mph in places, especially over hills and coasts in Southern and Western areas and also around any of the heavy showers that will be moving through.
The wind alone shouldn’t cause too many issues says IW Met Service, but with a lot of trees still to shed their leaves road debris such as leaves, twigs and small branches falling in places will make the roads very slippery and rather hazardous.
Although there is no weather warning for rain, both Saturday and Sunday are expected to be wet.
The Environment Agency say that for 1 hour either side of high water on Saturday, flooding of seafront roads, esplanades and car parks is expected. Water levels will be high in Cowes, affecting Medina Road near the floating bridge and Sea Street in Newport. In East Cowes, sea water forced up through drains may cause minor impacts to the roads at Albany and Well Road, York Avenue and Castle Street.
In addition to this, Jamie Russell, Chief Forecaster at IW Met Service, says that moderate over-topping of waves is to be expected along the South and West coast of the Island (Freshwater Bay, Steephill Cove, Ventnor and Bonchurch) with some minor over-topping along the East coast.
On Sunday, the tide will be slightly higher with similar impacts expected. As a precautionary measure, residents in Well Road and Medina Road may wish to install flood protection 1 hour before high tide.
IW Met Service add that much larger waves will affect Western and Southern parts of the Isle of Wight (Colwell Bay, Totland Bay, Freshwater Bay, Steephill Cove, Ventnor, Bonchuch) with some minor over-topping in more Eastern parts.
Hovertravel are anticipating disruption to their Ryde-Southsea service and with the catamaran service suspended as of tonight, those looking to cross the Solent from Ryde will have to divert via the Fishbourne car ferry.

Cant do anything anyway. Need the jab.
Water levels will be high in Cowes, just in time for the FB6 to try and start to run yet again.
Should be interesting then.
You really think they will fix it ha ha come on you know
The people one really has to feel sorry for are not the local businesses, or the true Islanders, but the still numerous holiday makers and the second homers whose jaunts the bad weather really nauses up. Apparently they ‘make our island what it is…’ Poor sods: my heart bleeds purple p×ss!
