West Cowes and Gurnard Town Councillor, Richard Hollis, has announced he will be running as an independent for Cowes North ward in the local elections in May.
Richard Hollis is standing as an Independent candidate for the Cowes North Ward in the forthcoming Isle of Wight Council election on 7th May 2026.
A long-standing member of the local community, Richard has been a member of Cowes Town Council for 5 years and is currently Chairman of Planning & Licensing.
Richard has much-needed experience as a County Councillor, having served for 4 years in Richmond upon Thames and then 10 years on the Island in Parkhurst and Newport (West) wards as a Conservative councillor.
Richard is committed to providing strong, independent representation focused entirely on the needs and priorities of Cowes North.#
He’s said:
“I believe the people of Cowes North deserve a voice that listens to them first and foremost.
“I have already identified several local issues that need to be addressed, and I want to be elected so that I can raise these and other concerns with the appropriate responsible bodies, including the Isle of Wight Council, Cowes Harbour Commission and the Ferry operators and actively pursue satisfactory outcomes.”
As well as focus on improving local services and supporting local retail businesses, Richard wants to bring awareness and support the many individual shops, cafés and restaurants in the High Street. Aiming to generally protect Cowes’ unique and vibrant character.
As an Independent Councillor, he will be able to work collaboratively with councillors of all parties and the many community groups to deliver practical, common-sense solutions to residents’ issues.
Richard’s campaign invites residents to share their views and ideas directly with him in the coming weeks as he meets voters across the ward.

Good luck!
You couldn’t get a better Councillor to represent you.
Independent is the way to go.
Good luck
Very best of luck Richard. You have a strong history of representing Cowes and even though I don’t agree with you always I know that you always act in accordance with your beliefs- particularly around planning.
What are his beliefs around Planning, may I ask? If it’s the usual
policy that seems to apparently prevail on the Island of blocking many new ideas, change of use, innovation, investment and generally resisting change and progress, that’s a huge negative, in my opinion.
Looks like even the Tories don’t want him! This town are sick of him and his toxic wife bullying our town. I wonder if he’ll make double figures at the ballot box? He lost this ward to Labour’s Quigley who is now the MP. If you want someone to blame then it’s this idiot Richard Hollis!
Labour mainly got voted in as an anti tory vote after the last fourteen years of the Conservatives. It will be interesting to see where labour get to in the next elections.
Richard Hollis has a lot of experience in council matters including planning etc.
After yet another accident at the Victoria Road / Mill Hill Road junction today where a car was flipped onto its roof, that could be a good place to start by adding clearer road signs and lighting at the junction.
It’s the second time in 4 weeks. I work from home and now leave my broom by the front door ready to sweep up the remnants of another wrecked vehicle.
Happy to have a chat Richard. Good luck.
That’s not poor lighting and signage, that’s idiot drivers who probably shouldn’t have gotten a license in the first place. The amount of accidents that happen on our dead straight 30mph roads is beyond comprehension. Let’s not waste our hard wanted tax money on pointless road signs, the same sort of people that need a slippery when wet sign on a slipway..I mean it’s in the name!!
