The driver of a vehicle wanted on suspicion of drink or drug driving was arrested in Ryde yesterday afternoon (Thursday) – but not before he ran from Police, making his escape through residential properties.
Hampshire Constabulary received reports of a red Ford Fiesta being driven around the Island by an individual suspected of being under the influence of drink/drugs and having made off from the scene of an accident on Gunville Road, Newport.
At around 16:20, the vehicle was stopped on Arthur Street in Ryde but the driver ran off, making good his escape through various residential properties on Argyll Street and Queens Road.
The 36-year-old male entered the grounds of Ryde School but thanks to the efforts of officers, including a drone unit and a dog unit, he was detained and taken into custody.
The unnamed man, from Ryde, was arrested on suspicion of drink and drug driving and failing to stop at the scene of a collision. He has since been released under investigation.
If you have any information in relation to this vehicle you are asked to call Police on 101, quoting reference 44200190546.

Why bother. All sentences are a joke since the UK filled up it’s jails with the ‘worlds finest imports’.
Now Police must have lost all care when chasing someone to see the courts let them off.
We NEED the public, chosen as with Juries to decide the sentences. The Judge could show the minimum to maximum allowed for each sentence BUT the jury then ‘decide’ at which level the deem correct and appropriate not the tired, biased, jude
Maybe he was having trouble with his eyesight and wanted to drive around to make sure he could see properly. In which case, it is a totally acceptable excuse and he should be exculpated.
How would this driver have made it to Barnard Castle with essential ferry travel only!
He thought he might try Carisbrook Castle and then discovered his eyes were bad!!
He was caught at Ryde School, they should of taken him around the back of the bike sheds and given him a good kicking……. he might remember that….
Mark, the back of the bike sheds isn’t an area primarily related to aggression – it was more related to Love in my day.
I suppose it’s law that he should be released under investigation but perhaps those that are suspected of using drink or drugs should not be allowed back into society until they are sent to court. If found innocent then release them, if guilty send them on a mandatory residential detox course. By that, I mean a custodial course.
Unfortunately the arrogant and irresponsible people who commit these anti social and dangerous acts do not have any logic or conscience. Hence in their addled brains being released under investigation equates to the thought that they have got away with it. If they are eventually convicted and given a non custodial sentence then they will see that as a win for them as the consequences are minimal . They will have no reason to reflect and change their ways.
When are these low lifes going to be given the punishment they rightly deserve. He and the other morons who drive under the influence don’t give a fig. They could seriously injure or kill INNOCENT PEOPLE. What has gone wrong with these human beings. Have they no conscience, do they think this is acceptable behaviour. IT IS NOT. The punishment should be automatic jail time, serving the full time, none of this bullshit half the time if they behave. So what if the prisons are full, so they have to share a cell, who cares, they are there because they committed a crime. Prisons are like holiday camps for some. They need a deterrent to stop them re-offending
Nice one. Back on the streets the rest of you.
