Members of Ventnor RFC gathered to celebrate the life of Emile Rouby – 1 of the founding fathers of the club – on Tuesday (4th April).
Around 120 people were present to demonstrate their love and respect for Emile in an event organised by Liz Morris.
Celebrant Elaine Cesar delivered the eulogy. There were also tributes from Tony Flower and Biz and Maggie Burrows. Ed Blake provided the rugby memories, Stuart Cain delivered his “Rugby Prayer” and Adam Pratt (Snr) acted as Master of Ceremonies.
Many of Emile’s teammates from the 1st Ventnor squad back in ’74 also attended.
James Morton from Ventnor Rugby Club said:
“Thanks to what Emile and his mates did back in 1974 plus the legacy that he has left to the club, there’s more than an even chance that there’ll be rugby at Watcombe for another 50 years.”

Always had sleepless nights when we had to play Ventnor back in the 80’s knowing Bob Freer was going to beat me up in the front row! Always guaranteed a black eye or sore ribs playing against Mr Freer. Always enjoyed a beer after the game and always ended up either in a bar in Sandown or Ventnor with this great man.Such an animal on the rugby field but a gent off it. I must mention what a great guy Emile was as this article is a tribute to him. Believe his family ran the Shanklin Hotel back in the 60’s 70’s? Great times that will never return. RIP Emile.
Rolf Harris. ?
Rolf Harris? Why don’t you put your real name up or better still call Neil up and tell him that! No you’re a coward hiding behind your computer. If Neil’s not up for it I’d still rate ob Freer even in his 70’s to put you on your backside. Pathetic!
