Vectis U16s secured a narrow 8-7 victory against Gosport Sharks in wet and muddy conditions, showing resilience and character in a tightly contested match.
With pitches across the Isle of Wight heavily waterlogged, the fixture was made possible thanks to the support of Sandown & Shanklin RFC, who hosted the match.
Vectis got off to a strong start, with Herbie Conway-Hughes crossing the line for a well-worked try in the first half, giving the team a 5-0 lead at the break.
Gosport Sharks hit back early in the second half, taking the lead at 5-7. However, Vectis remained composed under pressure and pushed forward in search of a response.
Late in the game, Conway-Hughes stepped up once again, this time slotting a crucial penalty to edge Vectis ahead 8-7. The scoreline held firm until the final whistle, sealing a hard-fought win.
Despite the challenging weather and heavy ground, both sides played in good spirit and delivered an entertaining contest. The victory reflects the determination and togetherness of the Vectis squad as they continue to build through the season.
GRAHAM NAMED IN HAMPSHIRE U18S STARTING XV
Billy Graham has been selected for the Hampshire U18s starting XV for this weekend’s fixture, marking a proud moment for Vectis RFC.
His inclusion is a strong endorsement of the club’s youth development and the talent emerging from the Isle of Wight rugby scene. Billy’s achievement follows years of progress through the Vectis pathway.
The Hampshire U18s coaching team also features two Isle of Wight connections. Head Coach Damian Marriott is Island-based, and Defence Coach Harrison Booth is a former Vectis Colt himself, further highlighting the growing influence of Isle of Wight rugby beyond local matches.
