Police have closed the main Newport to Sandown road at Blackwater this evening (Sunday) as a result of a road traffic collision involving a van.
The incident has occurred on the A3056 between Blackwater Hollow and Merstone Lane, near to Wight Building Materials.
Island Echo is told that a van is on its roof off the carriageway.
Police are on scene alongside paramedics from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service.
Roads are heavily flooded in the area as a result of recent rainfall. It is reported that the main road through Arreton is flooded in several locations.
Southern Vectis say that Route 2 buses are diverting via Rookley in both directions under further notice.
UPDATE @ 19:37 – It has been confirmed that 3 people were in the van when it overturned into a field.
Thankfully, no one has been seriously injured.
UPDATE – The road has now re-opened in both directions.

Just another example of island drivers I’ve never known so many vehicles to get rolled as we see here and they all seem to blame the roads ???
yes ray its common down here…it dont happen in london
lot’s of fields in London is there? You lot make me sick, you clearly have no idea how traumatic it is to be involved in a car accident so just cut the crap and mind your own business.
I think the island must be accident black spot by now !!!
BECAME THAT 5 YEARS AGO ,POOR ROADS BAD DRIVING AND MUPPETTS ON THE ROAD
So what’s the excuse ?
THE USUAL ,BAD DRIVING WEATHER ,SPEED MOBILE PHONES TAKE YOUR PICK
I’m sure the snowflakes will find one…
I’ve lived here 5 years. Compared to the mainland I’d say one factor is a lot less road police presence due to cut backs. I think folks have gotten use to such low road policing that they take greater risks.
Anyone know Tom Driscoll? Can the person who helped the van crash in Blackwater plz get in touch as paperwork was given to someone a big thank you xxx
All in the roads that have been re- surfaced……
Wired that
All on roads that have been re-surfaced……
Weird that
BET THE SCRAPYARD NEAR COWES IS ALMOST FULL NOW !!! NEVER HAD SO MANY VEHICLES BEING BROUGHT IN WILL SOON NEED EXTRA STAFF / DAY NIGHT SHIFTS AVAILABLE
More bad driving on the I o w
Phill you’ve absolutely nailed it again
The most ridiculous comments posted by “anonymous” idiots, so ashamed that they can’t identify themselves, pathetic!!
You know all the details, do you?
Absolutely right Phil it has to be bad driving otherwise everyone would crash at the same spot
Van driving too fast by any chance unbelievable can’t drive
Another crash on a road recently re surfaced……
How weird….
When I learned to drive I was told to slow down in heavy rain ?
Was that to allow the man walking in front of you with the red flag time to put up his umbrella?
Whilst appreciating the amount of rain we have had recently isn’t it time the farmers in this area where told to look at their drainage schemes. This is not the first accident here and the Merstone/Arreton area does seem to always be covered in orange silt and stone after a period of heavy rain.
So, slow down!!!!! It’s not rocket science…as anyone noticed aggressive van drivers who who drive so close it appears thay want to park in your boot?…if drivers don’t respect weather conditions, it usually ends in life threatening situations..
Enough is Enough, stop crap driving, and respect life, we are only here once….
All the more reason to take extra care, and not to assume the roads are free from danger..
Blocked drains every where, about time the sludge gulped was brought out of retirement if it’s not fell apart with rust from under use.
Here we go again….blaming the drivers….if there was proper drainage it wudt b flooded….so who maintains the highways…..oh island roads as per usual
These people kept their cars on the road in the wet….. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bAzrImhaArw
Deep clean of drainage system springs to mind!
Through Arreton this morning residents had Sand bags protecting their property, what a disgrace.
According to some people speeding is the only reason for accidents. Can’t possibly be open minded to anything else. Yes there are bad drivers, not just speeders but those who drive slowly and brake every thirty yards, but it wouldn’t take much on a road covered in silt to cause a car to skid.
Another rollover week on IOW roads lottery
What’s the jackpot going to be this week?
A free coffin
Causes? – driving too fast, on the phone, had a drink/drugs etc. – it’s all been said before, but add to that, everyone’s insurance premiums keep going up because of the careless few
Agree bad driving.
Drive to the conditions.
Simplies,
I was in the crash so keep ur disgusting opinions to yourself it wasn’t poor driving the driver done the best he could the weather was shocking there was no flood warning signs but funnily enough there’s one near the incident now that road should of been closed before we crashed ! We’re lucky to be alive we have to deal with the trauma of what happened now ! You wouldn’t be commenting if that was you in the crash or your family !
Yeah mum U tell them. Whoever are commenting these rude disgusting messages should be as shamed of there selves and stop being rude
Don’t want u reading the comments abs xxx
Glad to know that you’re all ok. That could have turned out a lot worse. That stretch of road has been notoriously bad for a long time and something should be done about it. We can all speculate as to what happened, but only those involved know the truth.
I hit a flooded patch in the road at night that I couldnt see and it pushed my car to the side and I was driving at a sensible speed.
Absolutely disgusting examples of human beings when you do not know the full story my family were in that car my sister her 2 year old and her partner nothing to do with driving when a road is flooded and you come across it he slowed down but aqua planned!!! Just grow up with the negative crap
Love u Nat xx
Another ‘Chitty Chitty Bang Bang’ when will this stop.
Plus the Land Rover ‘Roll Over’ too!
THE LAND ROVER DISCOVERY BECAME THE LAND ROVER RECOVERY LOL
Still speeding tho shell
I can not believe the mentality of people who comment on a story and make detrimental and downright rude comments without even knowing the full facts of what actually happened. I was always taught that if you have nothing nice to say then say nothing at all. I really hope everyone in the van is ok.
Some people need to learn all the facts before u guys start slamming the driver he is actually a devoted father who I know for a fact who I know for a fact would not put his family and kids at risk some of these comments a absolutely pathetic
Thank you whoever u r means a lot
AND YOU MEAN THAT MOST SINCEARLEY YOU DO ,MEAN THAT MOST SINCEARLEY
Sincerely
Wait until later this year, when UKOG, and oil and gas exploration company hit Arreton as they drill for oil near Perreton Farm. Oil spills, slippery roads, tankers and heavy equipment all making that road even more dangerous. God help us then.
If it was an accident with nobody at fault how come nobody else crashed at the same spot!!
How dare u was u there no u weren’t I was in the accident shut ur mouth and keep ur disgusting opinions to yourself people like you make me sick
