Works to resurface an ordinarily quiet residential road in Binstead have faced delays due to ‘adverse weather’, according to Island Roads.
Residents on Cemetery Road and Chapel Road were left wondering what had happened to the works when personnel didn’t show up as planned on Friday 23rd and Monday 26th. A tweet from the organisation places the blame on ‘adverse weather’, despite the Island experiencing warm daytime temperatures in recent days.
According to an Island Roads spokesperson, the ‘adverse weather’ mentioned is in fact unseasonably cold overnight temperatures. Cold temperatures can apparently cause issues with the road surface when new materials are laid.
An Island Roads spokesperson said:
“There are several elements to resurfacing schemes and some of these elements – particularly those involving hot materials – are particularly susceptible to weather conditions. Low air and ground temperatures, as well as wind-speed, are all taken into account when delivering work.
“Therefore, due to unseasonably cold nights experienced on the Island recently, Island Roads have had to postpone some resurfacing schemes because the night-time conditions fail to achieve specified requirements for laying hot materials. Where possible works involving excavation and/or cold materials have been progressed.
“We would like to apologise for any inconvenience to residents and road users who may be impacted by these postponements.”
Works are set to continue as planned this evening (Thursday).

Next they will be claiming its too warm in the evening to lay tarmac. Bunch of cowboys
Looks excellent hope cemetery road is as good
The road to Boot Hill was better!
about time they finish the roads they started.
Feeble or what.standard baloney
Why are some of the roads that have been resurfaced sinking and cracking already? New Road in Brading is an example. Island Roads have laid new top surface, tarmac, but have obviously not dealt with the sub-structure, hence the sinking. This is not good and certainly doesn’t give good value for money!
Apparently it’s not the process island roads use,or substandard materials! I think that tells us, all we need to know about island roads. Drive along Great Preston road, Alexandra rd, the Romans would have been embarrassed with that workmanship, and it’s been repaired many times since it’s original resurfacing.
