A teenage girl attempted to rob a shop in broad daylight brandishing a large kitchen knife earlier this afternoon (Monday).
Police officers were called to Duffetts Stores on John Street in Ryde at around 12:45 following reports of the unnerving incident.
It’s understood the suspect — thought to be around 14 years of age and wearing a school uniform — threatened a female shop worker to hand over money from the till when she pulled the knife from her white handbag. Fortunately, no money was taken and the girl fled the scene.
A spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary has confirmed to Island Echo:
“At around 12.45pm today (3 June) a girl, described as being aged in her teens, entered Duffetts Stores on John Street. She demanded staff give her money; whilst holding a knife.
“The staff did not give her any money and she left empty handed”.
Anyone with information should call Hampshire Constabulary on 101 quoting 44190190156.
UPDATE TUESDAY @ 09:30 – Police have confirmed that a 14-year-old girl has been arrested on suspicion of attempted robbery. She is currently in Police custody.
UPDATE FRIDAY – The 14-year-old girl was questioned by officers and released on bail until 1st July.

Terrible mistake to make at a young age.
“wearing a school uniform” – the master criminal always makes one fatal mistake – hers was to carry out her crime with the school she attends, clearly evident by the outfit she was wearing. Hardly the brightest in class, oh well, I guess a spell at young offenders institute beckons.
I recommend a different career path as crime clearly isn’t her strong point.
” hers was to carry out her crime with the school she attends”,…
That’s a bit of an assumption on your part
Maybe she’s more clever than you give her credit for,.. maybe it wasn’t the uniform of the school *she* attends.
People have been known to use disguises to try to conceal their identity
perhaps the career of detective isn’t for you.
Daemy
And I am most likely to be correct – look at the facts – it was lunchtime on a school day and had she gone to such great lengths to procure a school uniform that not only pretended to show attendance at another school, she would also have probably covered her face and taken into consideration, that whilst the cctv isn’t monitored, it still records and she can be tracked in the store quite easily.
Also, she chose the busiest time of day, for a poorly executed opportunistic robbery of a shop, when even the most dimwitted criminal knows that a significant portion of purchases are done by card, not cash and tills rarely have much actual cash in them, for this very reason.
no, she isn’t clever, just a stupid kid, who clearly didn’t think this through and will now suffer the consequences, which will cast a shadow over her life for many years to come.
you seem to know rather a lot about dimwitted criminals…..
There is plenty of them in the news columns each and every day – along with a whole host of hand wringers, apologising and making excuses for their anti social behaviour. She is an amateur criminal that needs a good taste of isolation and pain to bring it to her attention that her behaviour is unacceptable, as she clearly doesn’t listen to anyone.
Leaving aside whether she got hold of a school uniform from a school other than the one she attended, highly improbable in itself, she clearly hadn’t taken into account that central Ryde has numerous CCTV cameras. Your are right about people using disguises, but they are usually only effective if the face is hidden, or masked in some way!
get a job
Parents to blame! Probably on drugs and benefits and do not care for there children!
Such a shame, I hope the young girl is caught and she has some support to get her on the right track.
Is it only drug using parents who are on benefits that don’t care for their kids?
Why are the parents to blame ?????
No mistake, she meant to do this! What kind of childhood has she had where she thinks that this is a reasonable thing to do?
Mate I’ve just been down 1E, she tried it there too!
Hope she gets the support she needs.
With a knife too, dangerous individual in the making.
not a good sign hope they catch her soon thoughts go to shop keeper glad she/ or he are ok
Left empty handed? Did she leave the knife then?
Not exactly St Trinians at its best is it.
Disgraceful no respect should be at school any cctv @ shop
What a shame the CCTV isn’t being monitored anymore…
They’ll look through the cctv of the shop to identify the young misfit
Hi iam the shopkeepers son
and ?
And your point was?
HOPE YOU AND YOUR FAMILY ARE OK MATE YSED TO COME IN FOR FAGS AND TV MAGAZINE BEST WISHES
These comments are unbelievable. Your classic small minded nonsense from people who clearly have no street smarts or world experience but think they know everything.
Stop for a second and think of the huge number of reasons why a 14 year old girl might have done this. Maybe not because she’s a yob or a master criminal or because of her parents. For all you know, both parents are out of the picture and she’s been in care since an infant. She might be mentally ill. She might have learning difficulties. She might be exploited (which does happen on your glorious Island!). She might have a tragic homelife.
The point is, nobody knows so when the story concerns a child, maybe stop and think before commenting on it.
All people see is what they want to see, scratch the surface of our perfect island and you will find a world of drugs, poverty and exploitation that only happens somewhere else.
How pathetic you are defending this child this is what’s gone wrong with society to pull a knife and demand money there is no excuse be it mental health or otherwise
How is mental illness not an excuse, if you are literally mentally ill.
Sensible approach and Nobel sentiment
I wonder, however, if you would have said exactly the same if it was a 14 year old boy ?
Not really an excuse though is it? I’m 14 with no parents and not a great life, but I don’t go out trying to rob shops and threaten people with knives.
give it a rest IOWer, it is people like you, with an attitude like yours, that is the reason we have situations like this. If there were real, harsh penalties for this sort of action, then she would most likely have decided otherwise. Stop defending the little miscreant
and get her sent to a cell, with no tv, no play station, no phone, basic food and with the only expectation of an outside influence
being school books, lessons and exams. She can stay there until she realises that the world doesn’t owe her anything, she is not entitled to anything, other than the life that she was given by her parents at her birth, whether they are still around or not, is irrelevant.
Perhaps in a few years, she will have a job in a shop and someone will turn up and rob her at knifepoint and see how she likes it.
” get her sent to a cell, with no tv, no play station, no phone, basic food and with the only expectation of an outside influence
being “… where she can learn from more experienced criminals, how to do it better next time
Yep, the correct course of action in this case, is deprivation of freedom to protect the law abiding members of society from imbeciles like this, who spread fear and panic amongst a taxpaying, hard working, member of society who was simply doing there job to pay there bills and earn some money, honestly. Stop making excuses for the little runt – it deserves locking up and if you are worried about learning from others, then isolation is the way forward. Perhaps the whole experience of being isolated, no freedom and nothing to do, will scare her so much, she will focus on a life that doesn’t involve crime, like the rest of us.
@IOWer
A rather hyperbolic statement.
The facts: She committed an attempted armed robbery.
It is simple, her upbringing has led her to the point where she thinks that this is an ok thing to do. Simple as ! Stop making excuses. Not dealing with crime at a young age is what teaches people to think they can continue down this path unabated. This is a direct consequence of continued reduction in policing, social care and liberal ideals that absolve any blame for antisocial behaviour from the criminal.
you’re absolutely right Richard,..
“The facts: She committed an attempted armed robbery.”
everything else, including your opinions, on her reasons for doing it, or the historical causes of her behaviour are pure speculation.
Nah I go to her Skl and she used to be in my tutor , she’s a right dickead with a wonkey eye . She obviously didn’t take the money lolololol
I wonder how many other kids at her school will now come forward to say that she robbed them in the school corridors and were to frightened to say anything for fear of violence.
Reading the comments on stories both in the IE and CP, if that is a measure of the kind of judgemental, biased and black and white outlook the average IWer has, I’m surprised any of the kids on the Island are sane. But the reality is that most are hard working, society conscious and a credit to their parents and society. Rarely is there a reason to report on that though.
The knife wielding imbecile belongs behind bars in young offenders, in isolation if necessary until it learns to behave, like the rest of us.
