As the Isle of Wight surpasses the 150,000 Covid vaccine mark, younger age groups are being invited to book in.
Latest data from NHS England published today (Thursday), and recorded by the National Immunisation Management Service (NIMS), shows a total of 156,038 first and second vaccines have been given out.
In the week ending May 16, 7,793 doses — 2,065 first and 5,728 second — were given. During that week the national rollout invited 38 to 39-year-olds to have their jab.
Earlier this week, in some areas of the Island where GPs are controlling the rollout of the vaccine (hubs at Westridge, West Wight Sports Centre, The Bay Medical Centre and Carisbrooke Health Centre), people in their 20s have been invited to have their vaccination.
With warnings for those under 40 not to have the Oxford-Astrazeneca vaccine, advice has been issued for those in that age group to wait for an invitation from their GP to have their vaccine as the GP-led hubs offer the Pfizer dose.
So far, 94,276 people on the Island have had their first dose of a Covid vaccine, and using estimates calculated by NIMS and Public Health England, this equates to 64 per cent of the population.
A total of 61,762 people, an increase from last week of 5,728, have had a second vaccine after waiting nearly 12 weeks since their first. This means 42 per cent of Islanders are fully vaccinated.
Across the Hampshire, Southampton and Isle of Wight Clinical Commissioning Group, 1,484,683 vaccines have been given to those eligible — the third-highest CCG area in the country.
A first case of the Indian variant of Covid-19 has been recorded on the Island, but public health director, Simon Bryant said it was not a cause to panic but a cause for caution.
He said:
“We know this variant spreads easily — which is why we need everyone to continue with the behaviours that we know stop the transmission of the virus.”
This includes social distancing, wearing face masks and regular testing.
Speaking at Prime Minister’s Questions on Wednesday, PM Boris Johnson said there was increasing confidence the Covid-19 vaccines were effective against all variant of the virus, including the Indian one.

How come the older people can risk death from clots, but the young have a choice of jab?
This will only add to the suggestion that world leaders are trying to bump off the costly elderly who take the most from the NHS, pensions and most pay nothing in as no longer working.
All should be given safe vaccines no matter how low the risk.
It is our right as much as someone young.
Very true.
You cannot trust this Tory Government.
All people should be equal.
2 of my relations after the Vaccine suffered terrible full body rashes
One is 65 years old and one Is 42 years old
I am late 30s & with the bay Medical centre & keep being told the vaccines are now nothing to do with them. I would really like to know how I book my vaccine.
You can book it online at the NHS site, Just need your NHS number.
No we can’t we have been trying since last thursday. It only comes up with mainland vaccination centres only. The unders 40s that have been able to get the vaccine have been sent direct links to book with westridge from their Gps. My 18 year old nephew & his girlfriend have had the vaccine this week because their doctors sent them a link. Its seems very unfair.
Exactly so – you cannot book online, and you cannot book on the 119 phone line.
I’ve just been told by the Riverside Centre that we will be contacted by our GP.
Our GP, at Brighstone, say that it’s nothing to do with them, and they will not be contacting us.
Thats what I keep being told by my Gp. So how do we get our vaccines??? all I keep hearing on the radio is get your vaccine when you are invited. We are trying!
Why??? You have gone 16 months and still not caught this ,highly deadly, highly infectious virus lol ,and if you did your immune system has a 99.8% a.of recovery! So THINK!
Why???:
Because I am capable of rational thought
You have gone 16 months and still not caught this ,highly deadly, highly infectious virus:
Because I have not been out of the house since March 2020
lol:
I don’t know how to respond to that
if you did your immune system has a 99.8% a.of recovery!:
Let’s say you go into a restaurant – there are 1000 diners. The waiter tells you that two people are *most certainly* going to die after eating there, would you eat?
So THINK!:
Yes, I agree
OK, full disclosure (despite my reply to Rebel below), I am old and have already had two doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine.
It would appear that GP surgeries in South Wight, in particular the South Wight Medical Practice (Brighstone, Godshill and Niton), Bay Medical Practice (Sandown and Shanklin), and possibly others, are going to do nothing.
If you know someone in Newport or Ryde, then use their address to register with another doctor. After many phone calls, I think that Carisbrooke Surgery, and Esplanade Surgery in Ryde, are arranging for vaccinations of people under 40.
If you live in Cowes and wait for your GP to get in contact you will have a long wait. All the GPs have joined the magic circle and done a disappearing act and the receptionists have all become experts in medicine. They are good at cutting you off after 3 minutes though
No problem. Won’t be having any of them anyway.
