UKSA have installed the Isle of Wight’s very first ‘Seabin’ to aid the removal of plastics from our oceans.
Developed by the Seabin Project, this floating debris interception device is a revolution in ocean cleaning technology, helping to create cleaner oceans with healthier marine life. It has come about thanks to crowdfunding efforts back in 2016.
The Seabin has a submersible water pump and moves up and down with the range of tide collecting all floating rubbish. Water is sucked in from the surface and passes through a catch bag inside the Seabin. The water is then pumped back into the marina leaving litter and debris trapped in the catch bag to be disposed of properly.
The Isle of Wight’s first ever Seabin has been installed on a floating dock in the UKSA marina in Cowes. This strategic positioning enables the wind and the currents to push the debris directly to the Seabin.
For their community project, National Citizen Service students at UKSA chose to raise awareness of the Seabin Project. Due to their hard work in attracting support, the charity received an anonymous donation from a kind donor to fund the Seabin Project.
It is anticipated that the device will catch around 1.5kgs of debris each day.
