A cohort of 6 Ryde Harriers travelled to compete in the popular Fleet Half Marathon which was acting as a selection race to compete for England in the International Master’s Half staged in Swansea on June 8th.
Selection is based on running a qualifying time and to also finish in the top 3 in the 5 year age categories which is very tough with athletes travelling from all counties in England.
Dave Hunt, Carly Scoble and Pete Young all achieved the required criteria with outstanding runs so will proudly represent England.
Dave competing in the M40 – 44 category had the race of his life running a huge personal best of 71min 04sec to finish an excellent 13th overall and 3rd in his age group, from the 3000 starters.
After just missing England selection in the recent Farnborough Half, Carly Scoble made up for this by running another personal best of 82min 48sec. Like Dave, Carly also finished 3rd to gain selection. This also placed Carly 12th lady overall. The evergreen Pete Young also gained selection by winning his 75-79 category in a very impressive 104min 16sec with the second placer being over 10 minutes behind.
The other 3 Harries also achieved personal best times. Gary Marshall got stuck in from the gun to finish 26rd overall and 6th in his 40-45 category in 72 min 43sec. Next home was Simon Newman running a huge pb in 81.55 and to finish off a very successful morning Harriers men’s captain Trevor McAlister completed the PBs with an impressive 83min 45sec.
