Totland and Colwell voters have six nominees campaigning in their Isle of Wight Council ward ahead of the May 7 elections.
Residents can either back Empowering Islanders group leader Chris Jarman, who has represented the area since 2021, or opt for one of his five challengers.
Those looking to unseat Cllr Jarman include Michelle Abbott (Conservative), Tom Bignell (Reform UK), Eric James Gray (Liberal Democrat), John Hoath (The Green Party) and Paul Geraint Pugh (Labour Party).
The Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS) sought 100-word pitches and photos from candidates, either directly or through parties or groups.
Here’s what they had to say, in no particular order…

I started visiting the Island when my in-laws moved here some 44 years ago and finally made West Wight my home in 2017.
In these years I have seen many changes here- pubs closing and shops being empty mostly caused by bad decisions made by those who govern us and who have become less transparent as every year passes.
I believe transparency must be paramount as to how our money is being spent. If elected, I would ensure I am easily accessible and I will be there to listen to you, ensuring transparency in everything I do.

John Hoath
I’m a local resident standing for the Green Party in Totland and Colwell, committed to making the West Wight a better place to live, work, and raise a family.
With a professional background in healthcare, technology, and public service, I bring a practical, solutions-focused approach to local issues.
I believe in improving everyday life through better infrastructure, protecting our environment, and supporting strong, resilient communities.
I’m particularly focused on ensuring public money is used effectively, delivering real value for residents. My aim is simple: to represent our community honestly, make sensible decisions, and help build a healthier, fairer future for everyone.
Chris Jarman
I’ve lived in Totland for over 20 years, raised my family here, supported multiple local charities, and spent the last five years working hard as the councillor for Totland and Colwell ward.
I am standing again to keep a strong, independent local voice that answers to its residents, not to party politics.
I have fought to protect our NHS dentists, small businesses, green spaces, free parking, footpaths and the Afton tip, while challenging sewage discharges and inappropriate development.
I will continue to support truly affordable homes for local people to rent and to buy, and provide transparent and accountable hard-working representation rooted in our community and shared concerns.

Paul says: “I want to see less anti-social behaviour and more community policing in my area. I want to see more accountability of the water companies and stop the release of raw sewage into our rivers and waterways.”
