The Leader of the Conservative Group on the Isle of Wight Council has written an open letter to the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Police and Crime Commissioner calling on her to do more to tackle anti-social behaviour on the Island.
Councillor Joe Robertson, who represents Bembridge on the Council, has asked PCC Donna Jones to meet with him and local stakeholders to discuss what more she can do to help divert young people away from negative influences and tackle anti-social behaviour, saying that it is a concern that many Island residents face.
In his letter sent this week, Councillor Robertson has said:
“Along with many Islanders, I have concerns about anti-social behaviour and the negative influences that too many of our young people face. I know that you are aware of some of these issues, not only in your current role as our Police and Crime Commissioner but also from your time as Leader of Portsmouth City Council.
I, therefore, urge you to support the local police to identify opportunities to work with local stakeholders to help get young people into sports and other activities and divert them away from engaging in anti-social behaviour.
“As a former school governor and solicitor working in the family courts I know how early some of this problem activity can start if we do not do more to support families and the police.”
Councillor Robertson advocates the positive role organised sport can play in the lives of young people offering focus and positive role models.
In a letter that is direct in tone, he concludes by saying:
“I am working with police, local councillors and stakeholders and would encourage you to meet with us as soon as possible, to discuss how you can do more to support us.”
Island Echo reported earlier this week about a 14-year-old boy who was sentenced to a Referal Order for anti social behaviour committed in the West Wight.
Local stakeholders? And what may those be?

Anti social behaviour I agree is a problem to a certain extent , but hey there is worse things going on on this island.
makes me wonder if this Tory leader is trying to justify A portion the disgusting council tax rise .
Donna Jones is aware of the problems on this island and his her job to work within the budgetary restrictions she has got .
Donna is not stupid and doesn’t need a Tory member to tell her how to do her job so why take the time and effort to write to her when you could be doing something more constructive and try to save us money
It’s no good – the council will just have to admit they got it wrong and open up the (modernised) youth clubs again
This from the party that cut funding for youth clubs and youth activities and withdrew support for West Wight Community and sports centre.

Wouldn’t it be more appropriate for him to write to his MP and Party Leader since it’s his party in government which decimated funding for youth clubs.
Donna Jones has taken action. The Police precept has risen every year, for little apparent gain. Our judges can also help the Police, by being less gullible over stories from solicitors.
Pretty sure it was the conservative government under “austerity” measures that closed all the youth clubs and libraries. Now they’re wondering why kids have nothing better to do?
And this is from a guy whos party wants to build as many houses on the island and fill them with other council’s Rejects then he says we got anti social problems He is only saying something now so it looks good Him and his lot don’t care they won’t be retiring here
Just wait until he hears about repeated law breaking and corruption at the heart of his Tory government.
I mean, even the current Prime Minister has had two fines in the last year for breaking the law.

Until mass, low end immigration is addressed our Prisons will be as they are now, full of the worlds criminals, as well as our own, ensuring courts can never again give meaningful sentences to criminals.
So the law sees anti social behaviour now as a minor crime, despite it running lives of decent people
But stupid rich or elderly think that IF children are given more things to do, they will cause less damage.
But no snooker hall, playground, bmx, skate ramp will come close in mini thugs eyes as doing drugs, getting drunk, having s ex, and smashing up property.
So it just gets worse.
Only stopping benefits and child allowance will work, and THAT will never be allowed to occur, and they know it.
So out of touch.

Reintroduce Youth clubs. Absolutely brilliant in the 80s and 90s and certainly kept a lot of kids from getting into trouble. Don’t get me wrong, there was still antisocial behaviour going on but it was delt with in kind by the local Bobby’s. I know it’s no magic wand but it might just stop future trouble makers from going down that path.
I couldn’t agree more-closing youth clubs was a huge mistake and in my opinion the biggest cause of the problem.But most parents today do not control or discipline their children and magistrates are a waste of time with their non punishment sentences.
