Wightlink-LCM Systems Cycle Race Team rider Ian Hayden went to Hillingdon to continue his early season racing on Saturday.
Lining up was a field of 50 riders for the 40 minutes plus 5 lap race. After less than 20 minutes, a lone rider attacked and soon had a healthy lead over the bunch. Hayden launched an attack of his own, joined by another rider, and they bridged across to form a three man breakaway group.
Keen to drive the pace, Hayden put in huge turns on the front, but with limited support from his breakaway companions he sat up and waited for the peloton’s inevitable arrival. After 40 minutes, and with everyone back together, the 5 laps to go board was shown. Taking a breather in the bunch, Wightlink-LCM Systems’ Hayden moved through the bunch to await the final sprint finish.
The pace increased throughout the final few laps, and Hayden sprinted to 7th in the final bunch kick, getting ever nearer to his 3rd category licence.
