Thousands of people in Ryde have been left without water this afternoon (Friday) as a result of a major water main burst at Smallbrook.
Engineers are desperately trying to control the situation as fresh water flows into the nearby Smallbrook Stadium, which is now flooding.
It appears almost half of Ryde – on the western side – is without water supply as a result of the incident.
Southern Water is currently undertaking works at Smallbrook Roundabout to move critical parts of the local infrastructure to enable the development of a new, larger roundabout.
It’s thought that an 18-inch main that supplies thousands of households has blown.
Southern Water has been approached for a statement.
UPDATE @ 17:02 – Southern Water has said that pumps feeding the main have been turned off; resulting in some homes in the Ryde area experiencing loss of pressure and supply.
Engineers are trying to temporarily rezone water supplies to bring those properties back into supply while they look into repairing the pipe.
UPDATE @ 18:45 – Southern Water say that their priority is to reroute water supply around the burst to ensure the vast majority of homes have water again this evening. Early reports suggest water is starting to return to some households in the area,.
However, water is to be delivered to households on the Priority Service Register and a very small number of homes for whom the rerouting will not return supply.
Anyone who requires support should call 0330 3030 386.
UPDATE @ 22:13 – Southern Water says that all households in the Ryde area, other than around 100 in Ashey Road, Harding Shute, Smallbrook Lane, East Ashey Lane and Green Lane, should now have their water supply back.
There may be some discolouration while pressure returns and while it is ok to use the water as normal running the tap can help clear.
Bottled water stations at Ryde Golf Club and Smallbrook Stadium will be open until 22:45. Only those still without water should collect water from these stations.

lucky house open as usual
Explanation please?
I’m guessing means take away food. Can’t cook dinner. Baffled why all the thumbs down. Nowt stranger than folk.
that’s all new pipe work too is it
New pipe work, yes. Work is to get ready for P. Feather 904 homes which building will start soon I guess. They are trying to cover up by saying it’s the roundabout being made bigger. Do the Council think we are all fools?
And another success story for Southern Water ! Time they employed some decent staff that knew what they were doing !! I would start with the instant dismissal of the Island Manager because clearly he’s not worth his pay packet !!
A lot of the actual staff actually are alright ! It’s the management.
And this burst is no cause of someone’s mistake , due to the freezing temperatures over night I’m surprised this is the only big main that’s gone
They can’t get the staff these days! Clancydocwra staff who do the civil engineering for southern water don’t have the skills and knowledge for the work. Those that did have all retired now and the Southern Water Management team couldn’t manage their way out of a porta-loo.
Things could not get much worse – we got turfed out of the Ryde Weatherspoons due to the lack of water ! Seriously, sorry to all the folks affected.
be grateful that we can take running water for granted in the first place!
so – they have spent loads of money messing up smallbrook junction – the one that has been fine for many, many years and now they have wrecked the water supply for ryde. Perhaps they leave things alone – you know, it wasn’t broken, so it didn’t need fixing did it.
except it wasn’t fine, highest accident rate for any junction on the island.
You’re saying everything I want to say Ethan.
pathetic driving more like.
Pathetic driving maybe, but what about the innocent people who are on the receiving end of this “pathetic driving” Grow up Isle of Wighter, your comments are the musings of a retarded brain.
Quick, send in Floaty 6.
Sorry its out of service!
so how am l meant to cook the food for dinner the shop has run out of water.
southern water will you help us elderly deisabled folk cant even have a drink of tea??????????
Agreed, they sound send hell out or at least ask if everyone is coping ok. Nothing!!
i’m sure people are also having real problems sandra
It’s been a couple of hours. Last time we were cut off there were crowds of people in the street after 1 hour grabbing as many water bottles as they could from the van. Seriously I wonder how people today would have faired in WW2!
We’re in Binstead.. Newman road and we have none it is wide spread affected area.
Friends on ryde esplanade have no water either.
I’m in Fishbourne Lane and no water pressure
when do we get an update to tell us what is happening? i look after my mother. need to know.water stations?
Oh bother. Wish knew before did the painting. I’ll just stand here to dry then.
When is Southern Water going to start distributing bottled water?
It might serve the country to renationalise essential services like Water. There was a discussion on TV a couple of days ago with a senior manager for one by of the water companies bemoaning the fact that there isn’t enough money spent on the infrastructure. The main problem is all the profits end up in fat cats pockets instead of being ploughed back into the maintenance of the infrastructure.
It’s no good talking all the profits and then think in that the infrastructure will look on after itself. Call me cynical but this is a real truth.
Still no water in central Ryde – any news on water deliveries?
Lots of water in sandown.
Burst makes it sound like it happened all by itself. Or did you mean damaged by the workmen?
How about we take a break from all this constant digging up of the Island’s roads? You can only drive a mile or so before you find temporary traffic lights, temporary one-ways, diversions etc, and now they’ve managed to burst a water main leaving half of the biggest town on the Island without any water. PLEASE, give us a break from the constant roadworks.
This what you get when half the workforce can’t speak English…. (and that’s the ones born here)
