Award-winning actress Maisie Williams has designed a new range of sustainable merchandise, inspired by some of her favourite movie food references, in aid of a UK food inequality project – and Island business Teemill has teamed up with her to make it happen.
Maisie, 25, was announced this month as the new ambassador of the Mazi Project, a Bristol-based CIC that empowers marginalised 16 to 25-year-olds by providing meal kits, cooking workshops and jobs in the city’s food scene.
Maisie said:
“Food holds so much power. So, when you don’t have it, don’t have enough of it, or don’t experience the enrichment that food brings, you are faced with not only hunger, but also detachment, fear and isolation. I’ve been there. I’ve felt this. I understand the impact it has on your self-worth.”
“I’ve never talked publicly about this before, but I had a lot of support from Barnardos when I was growing up. They helped me to learn and connect with thoughts and emotions that I’d suppressed for so long. It had an incredible transformational impact on me. My fear dissipated; my sense of self started rising. I took a dance class shortly after, which led to auditions, my role in Game of Thrones and everything else that’s come since.
To celebrate her appointment, and raise vital funds for the charity, Maisie and The Mazi Project teamed up with leading sustainable clothing platform Teemill to create a range of merchandise inspired by some of Maisie’s favourite movie food references.
Every product made by Teemill consists of 100% GOTs certified cotton, in factories using renewable energy, and is designed to be sent back when worn out to be turned into new clothes.
Announcing the new designs on Instagram, Maisie said:
“If you’re like me, and, as a kid, would stop and rewind the movie to rewatch the characters eat delicious food over and over again, dreaming of the day you would be able to taste all these interesting and exotic snacks, then look no further… I designed the perfect T-shirt for you.”
