Newport hairdressing salon ‘Take 2’ is celebrating its 35th anniversary today (Wednesday 16th March).
Take 2 – which 1st opened its doors in 1987 – is the oldest hairdressing salon on the Isle of Wight operating continuously under the same ownership.
Owner Sue McLaughlin first trained as a hairdresser at the Isle of Wight College but has subsequently honed her skills at the Aveda Institute in London.
Sue works closely with a talented team of 4 hairdressers – together with a beautician and a receptionist – in her Upper St James’ Street salon.
Speaking to Island Echo about what are the best and worst things about hairdressing, Sue said:
“I love doing bridal hair. I always enjoy trying to make people look and feel good. The worst thing is the long hours and all the paperwork.”
Has business had been difficult during COVID-19 restrictions and lockdowns? Sue answered:
“We had had a lot of things thrown at us, but we have survived 2 recessions and 3 lockdowns. Fortunately, the government paid the wages during lockdown, and we had the opportunity to bond and train as a team.”
“This video was made as something fun to cheer everyone up during lockdown. It went viral and everyone loved it. We loved spreading positivity around when it was a tough time for everyone.”
Does Take 2 have a varied client base? Sue replied:
“We have all kinds of clients. About 10% of them are men. All are important to us. I have had some clients from before the shop started in 1987.
“Take 2 has done every kind of haircut from mohicans and flat tops to perms and big hair and then long and straight hair. We can make clients’ hair any colour they choose.”
Why does Take 2 use Aveda products? Sue believes:
“Aveda is ahead of its time; its colours are amazing. They are vibrant and natural and will not damage your hair as they are made from natural, cruelty free and vegan ingredients.”
Used to go there for years but inflated prices turned me to other better priced salons
