South Wight Area Youth Partnership (SWAY) celebrated their annual residential trip with an awards evening at St Mary’s Church, Brighstone on Thursday (17th October).
Young people, families, staff and volunteers came to watch those presented with awards and learn all about their experiences in the Lake District in August.
Along with a video combining many photographs taken by the leaders and the young people themselves, Pete Johnson of SWAY, spoke of the range of activities such as walking, ghyll scrambling and wild camping that were enjoyed by all over the 5 days. He talked of the many skills and attributes shown by the young people on the trip.
SWAY welcomed Terry Norton, Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner to present certificates to the young people for resilience and bravery, as well as kindness and cooking skills. He then spoke of the value the OPCC recognised in such trips and how their funding supports these opportunities.
Graham Biss, the High Sheriff of the Isle of Wight then presented the Roy Bromley Award of ‘Young Volunteer of the Year’ to Ruby McBride for her enthusiasm to step up to whatever she is asked to help in a gentle and respectful manner. Graham spoke of the value of delivering accessible and affordable services to the young people where they live in the villages.
The ceremony ended with a peek at the location of next year’s trip, to the Brecon Beacons. Applause rang out for those that made the trip happen, both front and backroom, staff and volunteers. A wonderful supply of cakes and creations from families made the refreshments most enjoyable. Another thoroughly good SWAY celebration.
