Students from the Isle of Wight Studio School descended on TheYachtMarket.com Southampton Boat Show last Thursday (21st September).
In line with the school’s ethos of engagement with the business community over 100 students took the opportunity to see for themselves the type of employment that is available in the marine industry.
All the students enjoyed exploring the show’s many stands and gathered careers information on the way which will enable them to enter the marine industry in its many forms. When asked, the students agreed that seeing the industry in a working environment was a great way to discover new career routes and they were looking forward to similar school trips which will enhance their education.
Kaskelot, a 3 masted barque built in Denmark in 1948 and registered in Bristol was open for the public to view and a number of the Studio School students took the opportunity to view the ship and sample what life is like below deck on a wooden ship.
One of the largest remaining wooden ships in commission, measuring 46.6m, she was built by the renowned J Ring Andersen Shipyard. Commissioned by the Royal Greenland Trading Company and used to supply remote areas of Greenland until the 1960’s, she later became a fisheries support vessel in the Faroe Islands.
In 1981 her fortunes were changed when she was completely re-rigged and set sail for a new career as a sail training vessel, as well as becoming the occasional movie star. Her appearances include the Return to Treasure Island (1986), The Three Musketeers (1993), Amazing Grace (2006) Alice in Wonderland (2010) and Poldark (2016).
Mudeford RNLI crew were the 2017 recipients of the MS Amlin Seamanship Award, presented to anyone who shows selfless action in the Round the Island Race which is organised by the Island Sailing Club.
Simon Dalton and his crew aboard their yacht and were in the last group to start the race back in July. They arrived at the Needles and taking a short cut avoided the known wreck. However, they had not taken into consideration the submerged Irex Rock, which proved to be their nemesis. Luckily for them the Mudeford RNLI crew were swiftly on the scene and the rescue took place.
When island produced Mermaids Gin chose to have a special event on the Onward Trading Company stand it was appropriate that a mermaid should grace the event. Mermaid Merchelle Roberts told us she has been interested in mermaids since an early age and is now a professional children’s entertainer. She revealed her costume can be somewhat limiting as the purpose made latex outfit weighs some 3.5 stones.
To promote Antigua Sailing Week global logistics experts Peters and May hosted a Caribbean Party. They presented the Breast Unit at Queen Alexandra Hospital with a cheque for £32,530.19 collected over the last year. Collections were also made for the Caribbean islands recently affected by the hurricanes. A number of Island patients attend the QA for their treatments.
