Strike action on the railways means that Island Line trains will be suspended on Tuesday, with a reduced service also expected on several dates until 6th February. South Western Railway has confirmed that due to industrial action by the ASLEF union, there will be no trains running between Ryde Pier Head and Shanklin at all on Tuesday 30th January. An overtime ban will also be in place on Monday (29th January), and from Wednesday 31st January to Tuesday 6th February. This means that a reduced timetable will be in operation on Island Line with trains running once per hour. Customers are advised to only travel if absolutely necessary and to avoid the first and last trains of the day, which are likely to be busy. Stuart Meek, South Western Railway’s Chief Operating Officer, said:
“We’re very sorry to announce that industrial action, including full strike action, will affect our network at the end of January and into early February. “It has been a tough start to the year due to adverse weather conditions and these damaging strikes will cause yet more disruption for our customers. “Our advice is to only travel if absolutely necessary on Tuesday 30 January and to check before travelling on all other affected dates. It is also vital that customers check their entire journey on all the affected dates, as other operators will be affected. “Once again we’re very sorry for the disruption this will cause and we thank our customers for their continued patience.”

Once again Stuart Meek (COO) is ‘very sorry for the disruption’ … so sort it out and negotiate with your railway workers – oh no you can’t because you’re ‘management’ (puppets) yet have no authority because you conceded it during COVID to the Department for Transport (DFT) who are the puppet masters pulling the strings.
Not sure what I can do to get to Shanklin from Heathrow on Feb 6
arriving from Vancouver Canada,,,
Heathrow RailAir Bus to Woking, train from Woking to Portsmouth harbour, Wightlink ferry to Ryde Pier Head and then train to Shanklin. It’s only on Tuesday 30th that there are no trains on the route.
Pathetic another excuse for not running trains !!! Give the contract to the steam railway, they can’t do any worse.!!!
Explain how it’s pathetic? These workers haven’t had a payrise since 2018, they highly skilled workers that takes around 9 months to be a driver. Yet the minimum wage in April will be nearly £12 an hour, which is great but it means higher skilled jobs need pay increases aswell. I also look forward to your explanation of how the steam railway would run it. Pathetic just about sums you up
I used to commute daily on the trains before they were replaced with “better” ones. Now I can’t risk it.
Between the strikes and the technical issues they’ve become pretty much useless and a credible challenge for the floating farce in the unreliability stakes.
Surely wiser to tar mac the lot, run electric shuttle buses and save a fortune as no need for expensive high voltage track maintenance nor all the staff needed to do this.
Horses, cylces, and walkers could then use the trackway too.
Win win for everyone but the lazy greedy workers imo.
Good idea iv
plus the drivers are moaning about being skilled at the complex driving, it could |NOT be easier here, one line for most of way.
But electric shuttle bus could be driven by anyone with a PVL, easy to obtain, and could then sack the ‘skilled’ driver and build houses on the repair yard and sidings instead of building over green fields.
Ban the train and lets have a greener and more efficient bat-bus service and as you say, horses, dog walkers and bikes could use the route in safety too. What could be better a safe flat route for bikes from Shanklin all the way to Ryde pier without cars just the odd battery bus.
