A major scheme to help improve traffic flow in Newport will not begin until at least the Autumn, it has been confirmed tonight (Thursday).
As previously reported by Island Echo, plans are afoot to rip up St Mary’s Roundabout at the top of Medina Way and replace it with a traffic light junction.
The plans were approved in September last year and work was due to begin shortly after, but things have been delayed by around 12 months. The news has emerged following a Cabinet meeting in Newport in which a response was given to a question put forward by local councillor Andrew Garratt.
The scheme features signalised junctions for Medina Way and associated traffic (to replace the St Mary’s roundabout) and for Forest Road, which will partially become 3 lanes wide, as well other features to help reduce traffic delays and cut bus journey times between Cowes and Newport. It also includes a segregated bus lane near the top of Hunnyhill, allowing the bus stop to be relocated.
