A full 24-hour road closure has come into force on St John’s Road in Wroxall today (Monday), as work begins to stabilise the embankment that partially collapsed and caused significant disruption.
The Isle of Wight Council scheme, delivered by Island Roads, will see tonnes of unstable earth removed and a new retaining wall constructed. The wall will be profiled to improve visibility for highway users and those using the nearby bus stop.
The project is scheduled to last 8 weeks.
Due to the scale of the embankment works, St John’s Road will be closed between Appuldurcombe Road and Whiteley Bank for the duration of the scheme. Redhill Lane is also closed for the same period.
Subject to progress on site, Island Roads aims to reopen the road under traffic-light control for the Easter Bank Holiday. Access to properties will be maintained at all times.
An Island Roads spokesperson has said:
“We know residents of Wroxall have had their fair share of work to contend with but, as with the recent road surfacing, they will know that this work is also very much needed.
“We will endeavour to complete the project as soon as possible and will of course keep the local community updated on progress.”

This works is well overdue. I am pleased it’s finally
being done.
Agreed. It’s disruptive, but stabilising an embankment before it fully fails is better than waiting for a bigger problem.
