Newport & Carisbrooke Community Council (NCCC) is seeking sporting suggestions for Victoria Recreation Ground following the relocation of Newport Cricket Club in 2022.
Ideas and suggestions should seek to enhance the natural beauty of the surroundings and blend into the environment.
Reassurances are being given that the development of the recreation ground for housing is out of the question.
Councillor Matthew Price, Chair of the Assets & Facilities Committee, says:
“This park is a much-loved historic asset which is in constant use throughout the day. The relocation of Newport Cricket Club has created an opportunity to ask the public what they would most like to see and re-invent the space for other users and sports. We are asking to the public to share their thoughts and ideas on how the grounds can be most beneficial to the sporting community.
“Victoria Recreation Ground will absolutely continue to be used for sports and recreation as has historically been the case.”
NCCC will collate a list of suggestions which will be shared with the Isle of Wight Sports Federation and Isle of Wight Council. A shortlist will then be put forward for a full public consultation.
Suggestions from sports groups, local schools, young people and current users of the ground are being encouraged in particular.
Submit your ideas by email to [email protected] or in writing to NCCC, The Loft, Pyle Street, Newport, Isle of Wight, PO30 1JW.

Has anyone bothered to ask the children what they would like? I am sure they will have more idea than residents so that it meets everyone’s needs. My first impression is a play park area for younger children with a seating area all enclosed to avoid fouling by pet walkers.
Got to be quidditch, douh.
But more seriously 2-3 lanes of a running track going around would be nice, just your typical sport area border.
Offer all the surrounding houses 20 metres of extra garden at £50K each with a codicil they cannot develop anything on that additional space, then the cost of any community resources will be nil and money in the bank for future upkeep, the site is big enough to accomdate selling a portion off and the community wins by having the resource they choose as opposed to one dictated by the council who will restrict any ideas due to cost implications.
Here’s an idea, why not relocate Newport’s football stadium here, they are called Newport FC, not Whippingham FC.
Thing is they won’t spend money on it to make it a decent athletics track or all-weather sports pitches, so it’ll end up a dog’s playground, as is now.
Why not build on it just what the island needs more 4-5 bedroom houses
Build an assault course around the dog muck!
