More than 300 people were caught speeding on the Isle of Wight in September, Police have revealed.
Hampshire Constabulary’s Roads Policing Unit carried out work on the Island throughout September with their efforts leading to 347 speeding drivers being caught, but the force has said the work to tackle poor driving standards on the Island continues.
The force has said that they regularly receive feedback and reports from the public about issues relating to driving standards and road safety on the Isle of Wight, with their work throughout September saw them visit more than 20 different locations all over the Isle of Wight on no fewer than 51 separate occasions.
These latest figures follow on from the work of the team in the months previous, with around 900 speeders caught over the summer between May, June, July and August.
In a post released on their Facebook page, Isle of Wight Police have said:
“This work is only possible because of the reports that the public makes to us. When you report speeding or other driving offences, you may not always see an immediate police response.
“However, please be reassured this information is all used to help us target hotspot areas.
“Please keep reporting your concerns to us.”

How about stopping the little motorbikes that plague Ryde with their loud exhausts… the cars that are set up to back fire.. the two dirt bikes that ride around top of Ryde ( Haylands to Well st ) no lights, no number plates… and the cars with blue lights on the front, and that weirdo with green underlights on his car !!! if any of those are reading this,, they are not insured.. !!!
Lights on the skirting are not illegal and the blue lights you think you see from the front are probably the headlight bulbs that do look blue neither of which is an insurance issue but i agree with the dirt bikes and exhausts you mention.
Underlighting on any vehicle is most definitely illegal when used on a public highway.
Think you will find it isnt as long as it is under the skirting of the vehicle and not down the sides of the vehicle.
Great Preston Road Ryde
Brading Road Ryde
Carpenter’s Road Brading
Embankment Road Bembridge
SPEED CAMERA’S desperately required at all the above to STOP
Speeding
Also STOP “IDIOTS” turning into West Street Brading
EVEN THOUGH THERE IS A NO RIGHT TURN SIGN!
Great Preston Road requires double yellow lines placing
down one side of the Road fully from Westridge end to the end of
Great Preston Road – going to Ryde St John’s Road direction.
This will prevent morons parking on Pavements and congesting the
Road.
There is an application in to do most of the double yellow lines as you suggest. These applications almost always get passed. Unfortunately it will mean with no ‘chicane’ the idiots will go even faster down Great Preston. Still, the road is going to be closed for 10 weeks in the new year (according to this weeks County Press) so we can all look forward to that disruption!!
Time for Parking permits to be placed outside the Council Houses
along Great Preston Road in Ryde.
Some households own more than 2 vehicles, therefore stopping other homeowners / tenants
being able to park their vehicles when they return home from work.
Parking meters / permit parking would rid the Island of excess vehicles.
Some vehicles sit idle along many island Roads.
The worse problem in Great Preston Road is the Double parking on
both sides of the Road from Preston Close to Nicholson Road.
It makes is impossible for vehicles to flow freely.
It’s only a matter of time before there will be a serious accident due to this.
IW Council need to place Double yellow lines along one side of the Road,
or even Double Red Lines.
I live off of High Park Road and it’s “DANGEROUS” driving along Great Preston Road.
because it’s so much easier to catch drivers than burglars and more lucrative in fines, drivers are such an easy target.
Obvious weakness in your statement, WHEN was the last time a person was killed as the result of a burglary ? The police do not get the money from speeding or any other fines.
january this year, pensioner in Derby, police are paid by the government and they get the money, next!
It’s just money for old rope, sitting around waiting to see if people break the law.
I witness bad driving on the island every day. Majority of it is just basic stuff that island drivers do not think is necessary. The use of their indicators is very limited. When you come to a roundabout, you must indicate which way you intend to turn. Some are not in the correct lane and do not use their indicator!!! Why, if you drive like this on your test, you would fail.
Stopping on a main road to let a car out of a side road happens quite often. Flash and let a car out if it doesn’t mean you have to actually come to a stop, because this is dangerous!
Speeding…..now many in this island, including bikes, do not recognise speed limits.
Slow down. It’s the law you know!
So many Company vehicles drive around and you can clearly see the drivers of the
Vehicles on their mobile phones.
Great work guys keep up the good work and make our roads a bit safer.
That must be a tidy sum for the christmas party then.
How many were issued in the evening when the boy racers are using their racetrack?
NONE !! they are pathetic..
Easy money 2/3 miles over no issues no problems does’nt affect anything or anyone but won’t tackle the real world problems…
I live in Totland, never seen Police!
They race up and down the Avenue and around in a circle to Yarmouth.
We have been asking for years for Police
To come over , never see them.
Another accident last night!!!!!
Bet you pay extra council tax too for Police services, it went up last year.
Bet council tax will go up next year too!
That’s because there is not a McDonalds or Tesco Express in Totoand.
Lol
Damn, for the island full of pensioners, it sure looks like we have a lot of racing.
This mobile police van is parked up at the usual spots, if you’re local you know where and when it’s about.
funny also, it’s always near or just outside a ferry route…catching easy prey.
If it’s about speeding get onto roads like Baring Road Cowes near the school
Park Avenue Cowes
Main Road Godshill
Church Road Shanklin
Undercliff Ventnor
I could go on and on but it’ll only fall on deaf ears
With the extra council tax money the Police received, they should buy more vans.
Agree about usual spots! Not only do they use same lay bys etc but they do it the same time of the day, same day of the week!!
Speed vans dont just park up where they want, they are placed at sites called KSI’s (killed or serious injury) and this has to be a certain amount and parked up where it is safe to do so.
Number plate regulations are there for a reason, so that ANPR cameras can read them accurately, this is important in crime detection and enforcement. They are not optional !
Sadly an increasing number of motorists are either ignorant of the law at best, or at worst are evading cameras for criminal reasons.
As an estimate about 1 in 50 number plates I pass daily are illegal for one reason or another.
Mis spacing is common, but more sinister individuals have plates coated to make them unreadable to cameras – a criminal act which requires tough sentencing , they often appear very dark and greyish.
Number plate violations need strict enforcement as they are often linked to a general disregard for the law.
So many Utility and Engineering Companies drive around the Island daily with
Trailers attached to their vehicles and the number plates are different to the vehicle.
Island Roads are NO different.
The island roads are sadly lawless.
