Sporting Opportunities Isle of Wight’s indoor bowls team finished among the nation’s best at the Special Olympics GB National Finals in Plymouth.
The Island squad travelled to the Plymouth Life Centre for the prestigious 3-day competition, where more than 80 bowlers from across the UK battled it out for national honours.
Following a practice session and welcome event on the Friday, the competition got underway in earnest on Saturday, with the Island’s bowlers progressing through a demanding schedule of matches to earn places in Sunday’s finals.
On Finals Day, the Isle of Wight competitors produced strong performances across 2 divisions, with Samantha and Sarah finishing 8th in Division A, Summer and Ben claiming 7th place in Division A, and Caitlin and Eloise securing 8th place in Division B.
The results saw the team finish among the leading bowlers in the country, a notable achievement given the strength of the national field.
Sporting Opportunities Isle of Wight has thanked a number of organisations whose support helped make the trip possible, including Wightlink in the Community for ferry travel, Vestas for sponsoring the team’s competition tops, WightAID for funding accommodation and Cridmore Farm for providing new kit bags.
The charity also praised coaches Gill and Gina for their dedication throughout the competition, as well as the supporters who travelled to Plymouth to cheer the team on.
With another successful national competition behind them, the team now looks ahead to a well-earned summer break before returning to training for future events.
