27-year-old Kurtis Lake from Southampton has been sent to prison for 8 months after stealing a safe from The Works in Newport. It was during the early hours of 1st February this year that Lake broke into the popular High Street store on St James’ Square by smashing the front door window. He managed to get away with a safe containing around £500 in cash, which was later found in the boot of his car. Police worked quickly to identify their suspect, moving in to arrest the 27-year-old less than 12 hours after the burglary. When stopped in a vehicle, officers located a knife in the driver’s door pocket and the safe in the boot.
Kurtis Lake, of Sholing Road in Southampton, was subsequently charged with burglary and possession of a bladed article in a public place. Appearing at Southampton Crown Court on Friday (8th March), he admitted both offences and was jailed for 8 months. PC Ramsay of Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has said:
“Tackling business crime is a priority for police on the Isle of Wight, with teams working with local businesses and making concerted efforts to target thieves. “The burglary at The Works was a brazen crime which took place in the town centre. The efforts of local police teams ensured that Lake was quickly identified as the person responsible, and I’m pleased that these efforts have resulted in him being sent to prison.”
Lake was previously imprisoned for his part in the theft of £200,000 worth of watches from Beaversbrook jewellers in Basingstoke back in 2020.
