Well Street in Ryde has been placed under an emergency closure as highway authorities look into the cause of a sinkhole and wider carriageway damage overnight.
A large hole has appeared in the middle of the road between Edward Street and Prince Street, posing a risk to motorists. Furthermore, the pavement on either side of the carriageway has lifted considerably.
Initial inspections suggest that a burst water main has forced the tarmac to lift – a theory supported by the fact that water can be seen rushing out of a BT manhole cover at the corner of Surrey Street.
The road is expected to remain closed for the remainder of today and potentially for most of the week as the cause is identified, resolved and the carriageway and pavement reinstated.
Motorists can still access Well Street from Prince South down.

I wonder why it’s called Well St.? lol
Sink hole …. ???? Is that the new name for a pot hole. Hardly a sink hole is it.
Maybe you are not a resident of Well St.
All that rain and the underground spring, the ancient drainage system could not cope I guess. I came up Well st last night and it looked like a garden water feature coming out of the road.. Imagine how the drains will cope throughout this Island if all those new homes are built, and all the extra cars, their weight alone will cause many more problems.. let alone no where to park !!
Imagine the extra water run off when Ryde is built to oblivion. Think this is bad, this IS the good times.
Must be another under ground water leak then hope they fix it soon
I am very pleased the road is closed, as it is always used as a Rat Run, so whilst closed I can open my windows, hear the birds and also still hear my radio or TV… bliss… No loud exhaust noises, no screeching of tyres… brilliant, wish they could keep it that way… !!
