Motorists heading into Newport are facing lengthy delays this Thursday morning due to the closure of the Fairlee link road.
The failure of the main traffic lights at the junction with the link road and the dual carriageway (Medina Way) means that Island Roads have taken the decision to divert all traffic. The lights failed last night.
Those heading into Newport from Fairlee Road must now travel down to and around Coppins Bridge, which is resulting in huge tailbacks.
It is reported that traffic is now queuing back to Racecourse Roundabout via Fairlee, with significant delays on Staplers Road and Long Lane also.
Southern Vectis is reporting delays of over 20 minutes to their Route 5 and 9 bus services.
Island Roads say engineers are en-route to resolve the situation. The PFI contractor also says that the road has been closed for the safety of all highway users whilst service is restored to the traffic signals.
UPDATE @ 08:43 – With rush hour well underway, traffic is now backing up to Wootton and into East Cowes.
The clearest route into Newport at this moment in time is via Blackwater.
UPDATE @ 10:22 – Island Echo readers are reporting that it is taking up to 2 hours to travel between Ryde and Newport.
UPDATE @ 15:50 – The Isle of Wight Council say that the traffic lights won’t be fixed until Friday.
Motorists are being urged to take alternative routes home this evening. Read more at https://www.islandecho.co.uk/link-road-lights-wont-be-fixed-until-friday-after-major-fault/.
LINK ROAD LIGHTS WON’T BE FIXED UNTIL FRIDAY AFTER ‘MAJOR FAULT’

Leave them off .the traffic flows much better without them .
You can’t leave the dual carriageways off unless you close it then you have the jams like now. I do agree the roundabout lights could be switched off because that does flow better without them especially at night
They were off last night so I am surprised they aren’t fixed for this morning
A policeman with some big white gloves might help
Another brilliant decision by Islsnd roads to close the slip road rather than putting something in place for the morning. Temporary lights or manual stop and go signs would have elleviated so much trouble during the rush hour period.
Yes, but that would involve spending money…
but that requires forward thinking
Left Ryde at 7.20, got to work at St Marys 9.45. No workmen in sight !!!!
2 hours delays into newport!
What’s wro g with a policeman doing signal duty at defunct lights & so stop these horrendous delays!!!!
got off the bus at Island harbour and walked, was wayyyyy quicker
What time did island roads get the lights working?
I think it’s stupid they shut the slip road when they can just have police directing traffic
